In this lesson, we will learn about the past tense in Serbian verbs. The past tense is used to talk about actions or events that have already happened in the past.

Formation of Past Tense

To form the past tense in Serbian, we need to add the suffix -о/-ла/-ло to the stem of the verb. The suffix we use depends on the gender of the subject. Here are some examples:

Serbian Pronunciation North Azerbaijani
говорити (to speak) - masculine говорио danışdı
говорити (to speak) - feminine говорила danışdı
говорити (to speak) - neuter говорило danışdı

Irregular Verbs in the Past Tense

Like in English, there are some Serbian verbs that have irregular past tense forms. Here are some examples:

Serbian Pronunciation North Azerbaijani
бити (to be) био/била/било idi
имати (to have) имао/имала/имало sahib oldu
хтети (to want) хтео/хтела/хтело istədi

Usage of Past Tense

The past tense is used to talk about completed actions or events that happened in the past. Here are some examples:

  • Јуче сам гледао филм. (Yesterday, I watched a movie.)
  • Прошле године смо путиовали у Италију. (Last year, we traveled to Italy.)
  • Овај град је био мој дом пре 10 година. (This city was my home 10 years ago.)

  • She studied Serbian for 3 months.
