Fruits

Here are some common fruits in Thai:

Thai Pronunciation English
ส้ม (sôm) [sôm] orange
เงาะ (ngǎo) [ŋaw] rambutan
มะพร้าว (mápráao) [má.práːw] coconut
มะม่วง (mámuang) [má.mûaŋ] mango
  • Fruits in Thai are often eaten ripe and raw. For example, the mangoes in Thailand are usually eaten while they're still green and hard, and dipped in sweet and spicy sauce.
  • Thai fruits are also often used in desserts, like the famous mango sticky rice (kâo nêeôw mà-mûaŋ)!

Vegetables

Here are some common vegetables in Thai:

Thai Pronunciation English
ผักกาด (pàk-gàat) [pàk.kàːt] lettuce
คะน้า (ká-náa) [ká.náː] Chinese kale
แตงกวา (dtǎeng-gwaa) [tɛ̂ŋ.kwǎː] cucumber
กะหล่ำปลี (gà-làm-bplii) [kà.làm.bplii] cabbage
  • Vegetables in Thailand are often eaten stir-fried with meat, like pad krapow moo (spicy stir-fried basil with pork) or pad pak ruam (mixed vegetable stir-fry).
  • Thai cuisine is known for its liberal use of fresh herbs and spices. You might find yourself eating vegetables you never knew existed, like the tangy slice of pickled bamboo shoot (nor mai) that tops your pad thai.

I hope you have enjoyed this lesson on Thai fruits and vegetables! Keep practicing and soon you'll be a master of the Thai kitchen.
