Not only will you learn new words, but you'll also gain insight into Thai culture and customs. In this lesson, we'll cover the basic vocabulary for common animals in Thai.

Here are some common farm animals in Thai:

ไก่ | gài | chicken |
หมู | mŏo | pig |
วัว | wua | cow |
แพะ | pɛ́ | goat |
แกะ | gɛ̀ | sheep |
- ไก่ (gài) means chicken. In Thai cuisine, chicken is a staple ingredient used in many dishes such as pad thai and green curry.
- หมู (mŏo) means pig. In Thailand, pork is a commonly consumed meat and is even sometimes used in dishes such as pad see ew.
- วัว (wua) means cow. Cows are not typically consumed for meat in Thailand due to cultural and religious reasons.
- แพะ (pɛ́) means goat. Goat meat is used in traditional north-eastern Thai cuisine and is usually served as a spicy curry.
- แกะ (gɛ̀) means sheep. Sheep are not traditionally consumed in Thai cuisine.

- ปลา (bp-la) means fish. Thailand is known for its fresh seafood and fish is commonly consumed grilled or deep fried.
- ปู (bpùu) means crab. Crab is often used in traditional Thai recipes such as Som Tam and Pad Thai.
- กุ้ง (gûng) means shrimp. Shrimp is a staple ingredient in many Thai dishes, such as Tom Yum Goong and Pad Thai.
- หอย (hɔ̌ɔi) means clam. Clams are often used in Thai salads and soups.
- หมึก (mèk) means squid. Squid is used in many Thai dishes such as fried calamari and spicy squid salad.

Here are some common domestic animals in Thai:

- กระต่าย (grà-dtaai) means rabbit. There are three types of rabbit found in Thailand, and they are often used in various meat dishes.
- หมูป่า (mŏo bpàa) means wild boar. Wild boar is considered a delicacy in many regions of Thailand, especially in the north-east.
