Dari Personal Pronouns

Pronouns are words that replace nouns, thus avoiding constant repetition in speech and writing. In Dari, the personal pronouns are:

Dari Pronunciation English
منْ "man" I
تو "to" You (singular, familiar)
او "ow" He or she (depending on the gender of the person being referred to)
مون "mown" We
شما "shumaa" You (plural or singular, formal)
آنها "aanaa" They

Using Personal Pronouns in Sentences

In Dari, personal pronouns are generally used before verbs to indicate the subject of the sentence. Here are some examples:

  • من دارم خوشحالی می‌کنم. (Man daar-am khoshhaali mikunam.) - I am happy.
  • تو می‌آیی؟ (To mi-aa-ee?) - Are you coming?
  • او خیلی باهوش است. (Ow kheli bahoosh ast.) - He/she is very smart.
  • مون داریم حرکت می‌کنیم. (Mown daar-im harakat mikun-im.) - We are moving.
  • شما چندتا بچه دارید؟ (Shumaa chand-taa bacha daar-id?) - How many children do you have?
  • آنها به دشمن کمک می‌کردند. (Aanaa be dushman komak mikard-and.) - They used to help the enemy.

Remember that in Dari, the verb changes based on the gender and number of the subject. We will cover more about verb conjugation in the next lesson.
