Weather in Afghanistan[edit | edit source]

Afghanistan has a continental climate with cold winters and hot summers. Northern parts of the country experience subarctic and alpine climate. In contrast, western and southwestern regions are deserts, while central and eastern regions are mostly dry.

The country’s weather pattern is dominated by air masses moving from the Siberian High and the North Atlantic Ocean. Also, Afghanistan’s topography with mountains, valleys, and river basins significantly affects local weather patterns.

The importance of weather in Afghan culture: In Afghanistan, the weather has been a crucial factor in people's lives for centuries. Farmers, pastoralists, and nomads are highly dependent on precipitation for their livelihood. A good rain or snow season means healthy crops and a better life for the community. That's why there are many festivals, fairs, and celebrations throughout the country to celebrate such occasions. The famous "Jashn-e-Nowroz" (New Year), which marks the arrival of the spring and the renewal of life, is one such example.
