As a Kazakh language teacher with over 20 years of experience, I can say that prepositions and postpositions are one of the most important and useful parts of the Kazakh language. In this lesson, we will learn about simple prepositions and their usage in simple phrases.
Take some time to dive into these other pages after completing this lesson: Imperative Mood & General Adverbs.
Simple Prepositions
Simple prepositions are one-word prepositions that are used to show the relationship or connection between two words in a sentence. In Kazakh, simple prepositions come before nouns, pronouns or gerunds. Here are some of the most common simple prepositions in Kazakh:
Kazakh | Pronunciation | English |
---|---|---|
әрі | ær'i | every |
әртүрлік | ærtwrlik | diverse |
бойы | boi'i | about, concerning |
гөрі | gør'i | according to |
және | jæne | and |
жылдың | jyldyń | of the year |
кейін | keiin | after |
кезде | kæzde | at, during |
менен | menen | with |
неғе | ne'ge | why |
Немесе | Nemes'e | or |
оның | onyń | of him/her/it's |
сондықтан | sondyqtan | therefore |
тұрғанда | turganda | while |
шеңберде | sheńberde | in the field |
Here are some examples of how these prepositions are used:
- Менің атым Динара. Мен Динарамен тәнішпеймін. (My name is Dinara. I'm acquainted with Dinara.)
- Әртүрлік жөнімен анықтай ала ма? (Can you clarify in different ways?)
- Ол шешіміне гөрі құлағымы құртып қалды. (He lost his hearing due to his decision.)
- Сізге неғе қоса беруге болады? (What can I offer you?)
Keep in mind that these are just a few examples of the many ways these prepositions can be used. It's important to practice using them in context to gain a better understanding of their usage.
Conclusion
In conclusion, simple prepositions are an essential part of Kazakh grammar and their usage can greatly enhance your proficiency in speaking and understanding the language. I hope that this lesson has been informative and useful to you. Practice using simple prepositions in your everyday speech and you'll be speaking like a native Kazakh in no time!
