Thai Telephone Numbers
Now, let's learn how to say telephone numbers in Thai. In Thailand, phone numbers are nine digits long, separated into groups of two, three, and four digits. The format is: xx-xxx-xxxx.
To say a telephone number in Thai, simply read out the digits in groups, with the following rules:
1. The first group of two digits is read as a single number. Use the specific word ยี่ (yi) to indicate the number 2; e.g.
- โทรศัพท์หมายเลข ๒๐๓-xxxxx (telephone number 203-xxxxx) is read as โทรศัพท์หมายเลข สอง-ศูนย์สาม (telephone number xorng suun saam).
2. The second group of three digits is read as a normal three-digit number.
- For example, โทรศัพท์หมายเลข 081-xxx-xxxx (telephone number 081-xxx-xxxx) is read as โทรศัพท์หมายเลข แปดหนึ่ง-ศูนย์แปดห้า-อีกสี่ (telephone number bpaet nueng suun bpaet ha ek si).
3. The third group of four digits is read as two pairs of digits.
- For example, โทรศัพท์หมายเลข 02-xxx-xxxx (telephone number 02-xxx-xxxx or a Bangkok number excluding landline number starting with 02) is read as โทรศัพท์หมายเลข ศูนย์สอง-ศูนย์สอง-แปดสี่-เจ็ดห้า (telephone number suun saawng suun saawng bpaet si jet haa).
- For example, โทรศัพท์หมายเลข 076-xxx-xxxx (telephone number 076-xxx-xxxx or a number in Phuket province) is read as โทรศัพท์หมายเลข เจ็ดห้า-หกศูนย์-แปดสี่-เจ็ดห้า (telephone number jet haa hok suun bpaet si jet haa).
It can be challenging at first, but with a bit of practice, you'll be able to master the technique of saying telephone numbers in Thai. It is highly recommended to repeat numbers when someone tells you a phone number to make sure you get it correctly.
Practice
Now that you've learned the basics of how to say telephone numbers in Thai, let's practice.
1. 080-123-4567 (telephone number in Thailand)
- โทรศัพท์หมายเลข แปดศูนย์-หนึ่งสองสาม-สี่ห้าหกเจ็ด (telephone number bpaet suun nueng song saam si haa hok jet).
2. 032-987-6543 (telephone number in Thailand)
- โทรศัพท์หมายเลข ศูนย์สามสอง-เก้าแปดเจ็ด-หกห้าสี่-สาม (telephone number suun saam song kao bpaet jet haa hok si saam)
I hope you found this lesson useful and interesting. Keep practicing your Thai skills, and you'll be able to communicate in Thai in no time.
