=== Exceptions ===
A plural is the form of a word that represents more than one person, animal, place, thing or concept. In Northern Uzbek, as in many other languages, plurals are formed by adding a suffix to the singular form of a noun or an adjective.

There are some exceptions to this rule. For example, nouns ending in -a or -i do not take the -lar suffix. Instead, they take the suffix -lar or -lar. For example, the singular form of the word "house" is "xona", and the plural form is "xonolar".
Let's take the word "kitob" (book) as an example. To create its plural form, we add the suffix "-lar" to it. The plural form of "kitob" is therefore "kitoblar" (books).

=== Irregular Plurals ===
Here is a list of some common plural suffixes in Northern Uzbek:
- -lar: used with most nouns and adjectives ending in a vowel sound
- -lar/-ler: used with most nouns and adjectives ending in a consonant sound

Some nouns have irregular plural forms. For example, the singular form of the word "child" is "bolalik", and the plural form is "bolalar".

There are some exceptions to this rule. For example, adjectives ending in -a or -i do not take the -lar suffix. Instead, they take the suffix -lar or -lar. For example, the singular form of the word "happy" is "xush", and the plural form is "xushlar".

Adjectives in Northern Uzbek can also take plural forms. The plural forms of adjectives are formed by adding the appropriate plural suffixes to their singular form.

Northern Uzbek Grammar - Plurals

Hi Northern Uzbek learners! 😊
In this lesson, we will explore the plural form of Northern Uzbek nouns and adjectives. Knowing how to create plurals is essential to be able to communicate effectively in this language.

Consider exploring these related pages after completing this lesson: Pronouns, Future Tense, Adjectives & Accusative case.

What is a plural?[edit | edit source]

A plural is the form of a word that represents more than one person, animal, place, thing or concept. In Northern Uzbek, as in many other languages, plurals are formed by adding a suffix to the singular form of a noun or an adjective.

Let's take the word "kitob" (book) as an example. To create its plural form, we add the suffix "-lar" to it. The plural form of "kitob" is therefore "kitoblar" (books).

Here is a list of some common plural suffixes in Northern Uzbek: - -lar: used with most nouns and adjectives ending in a vowel sound - -lar/-ler: used with most nouns and adjectives ending in a consonant sound

Plurals of nouns[edit | edit source]

1. Plurals with the suffix -lar/-ler This suffix is added to most of the words ending in a consonant sound.

Northern Uzbek Pronunciation English

uy [u:j] house
bozor [bo'zor] market
qalampir [qalan'pir] pencil

qaynagini [qajna'ɣini] boilers
qogʻozni [qo'ɣozni] papers
choyxonasini [ʧojxona'sini] tea houses
damqalqini ['damqalqini] axes

Plurals of adjectives[edit | edit source]

Adjectives in Northern Uzbek can also take plural forms. The plural forms of adjectives are formed by adding the appropriate plural suffixes to their singular form.

1. Plurals with the suffix -lar/-ler

Northern Uzbek Pronunciation English
yaxshi ['jaʃʃi] good
chet ['ʧet] different
yosh [joʃ] young
qiziq [qizi'q] interesting
qayda [qaj'da] where

2. Plurals with the suffix -lar

Northern Uzbek Pronunciation English
qizil ['qiziɫ] red
koʻk [koʻk] blue
oq ['oq] white
qora [qo'ra] black
yomon ['jo:mon] bad

In Northern Uzbek, some adjectives are invariable, which means that their singular and plural form is the same. For example: "qari" (large), "kichik" (small), "oʻrtacha" (average), and "ajoyib" (amazing).

Plurals in context[edit | edit source]

Let's have a conversation in Northern Uzbek using plurals:

  • Person 1: Salom, Bugun uyidan chiqib, koʻp kitoblar sotib oldim. ("Hello, today I went out of the house and bought many books.")
  • Person 2: Qayerdan sotib oldingiz? ("Where did you buy them?")
  • Person 1: Bozoridan sotib oldim. ("I bought them from the market.")
  • Person 2: Ajoyib! Uyda bu kitoblar qayerga qoʻygan? ("Amazing! Where did you put these books at home?")
  • Person 1: Bu kitoblar kitobxonada turadi. ("These books will be in the library.")

Conclusion[edit | edit source]

In this lesson, we have seen how to create plurals in Northern Uzbek for nouns and adjectives. Remember that practice makes perfect, so don't hesitate to use what you have learned by talking to native speakers on Northern Uzbek speakers and asking them any questions.
