Thai Grammar → Prepositions → Prepositions of Movement

In this lesson, we will learn about prepositions of movement in Thai. Prepositions are words that show the relationship between two things in a sentence. Prepositions of movement indicate a change of position from one place to another, such as 'to' and 'from'. Understanding and using prepositions of movement correctly is essential for constructing accurate Thai sentences. Let's get started!

Prepositions of Movement

Prepositions of movement indicate the direction of movement or the starting and ending points of movement. Here are some essential prepositions of movement in Thai:

Thai Pronunciation English
ไป bpai to
มา maa from
เข้า khao into
ออก awk out of
ข้าม khàam across / over

Note that in Thai, we do not use the equivalent of 'on' or 'off' when talking about transportation, such as getting on or off a bus. Instead, we use 'in' (ใน) or 'out' (ออก) depending on the context.

Here are some examples of how to use prepositions of movement in Thai sentences:

  • ฉันไปโรงเรียนเช้า - Chăn bpai rong-rian chao (I go to school in the morning)
  • เขาไม่มาทำงานวันนี้ - Khăo mâi maa tam-ngaan wan-née (He/she didn't come to work today)
  • เด็กเล่นในสวนสาธารณะ - Dèk len nai sŭan-sà-taa-ra-ná (Children play in the public park)
  • เดินข้ามสะพาน - Dern khàam sà-păan (Cross the bridge by foot)
  • ออกจากบ้าน - Awk jàak bâan (Exit the house)

Practice Exercises

Now that we have learned about prepositions of movement in Thai, let's practice constructing some sentences with them:

  • Translate the following sentence into Thai: "I went to the market yesterday."
  • Translate the following sentence into Thai: "The cat jumped off the roof."
  • Use ขึ้น (khuen) and ลง (long) to describe going up and down stairs in Thai.
  • Write a sentence in Thai using เข้า (khao) to describe going into a building.
