Kazakh Vocabulary → Family and Relationships → Basic Family Vocabulary

As a Kazakh language teacher with 20 years of experience, I'm excited to help you learn Kazakh vocabulary related to family and relationships! In this lesson, you will learn the names of family members, relatives, and kinship terms in Kazakh.

Basic Family Vocabulary

Let's start with some basic family vocabulary in Kazakh:

Kazakh Pronunciation English

Екеуі yekewi parents
Аға, аурудың қазанша \'aɣa, awrudyn qazanşa grandfather (paternal/maternal)
Әже, аурудың қазанша \'әʒe, awrudyn qazanşa grandmother (paternal/maternal)

Апә, ауызша жас \'ape, awyzşa jas younger sister
Бала bola child
Ер, әйел er, \'æjel male/female
  • "Yekeu" means "parents" in Kazakh, which is equivalent to "mom and dad" or "mother and father" in English.
  • "Aga" and "aje" mean "grandfather" and "grandmother" respectively, and each has two versions depending on whether they are from the father's (paternal) or mother's (maternal) side.
  • "Aka" and "apa" mean "older brother" and "older sister" respectively, while "adem(bap)" and "ape" mean "younger brother" and "younger sister".
  • "Jas" means "age" in Kazakh. It is added to the end of the words for "older" and "younger" siblings to indicate their age relative to the speaker.
  • "Er" and "ajel" mean "male" and "female" respectively. They may be used to describe in-laws, distant relatives, or other members of the family.

Extended Family Vocabulary

Here are some other family members and relatives that can be commonly found in the extended Kazakh family:

  • Дәрігер || däri'ger || doctor
  • Қарын, екінші ағашқаға || qaryń, ekinshi ağaşqağa || husband (lit. second half)
  • Қызық || qyz'yq || wife (lit. small half)

Kinship Terms

In addition to the names of family members and relatives, there are also kinship terms that indicate the relationship between family members. Here are some examples:

  • Әке || äke || older male sibling of a parent (uncle or great-uncle)
  • Әни || äni || older female sibling of a parent (aunt or great-aunt)
  • Ежей || ejey || younger sibling of a parent (aunt or uncle)
  • Егізбап || egiz[bap] || oldest male cousin
  • Жұбұрт || júburt || oldest female cousin
  • Note that these words may have different spellings or pronunciations depending on the region or dialect of Kazakh.

Usage Tips

Here are some tips to help you use these family-related Kazakh words and phrases:

  • When addressing family members or relatives who are older than you, it is common to use "-ғұл" (-ğul) or "-шы" (-şı) as a suffix to their name to show respect, such as "Ағабай-ғұл" (Ağabay-ğul) or "Аке-шы" (Ake-şı).
  • In casual or friendly conversations, some Kazakh speakers use nicknames or shortened forms of family names, such as "Айка" (Ayka) for "Айгүл" (Aygül) or "Дәулет" (Däwlet) for "Дәулетқызы" (Däwletqyzı).

I hope this lesson helps you feel more confident in speaking Kazakh with your family members and relatives!
