Negation is the process of expressing the opposite of something. In Tamil, negation is expressed using the word "இல்லை" (illai).

Heading level 3: Negating Simple Sentences[redaktə | mənbəni redaktə et]

To negate a simple sentence in Tamil, simply add "இல்லை" (illai) at the end of the sentence.

For example:

நான் படிக்கிறேன் nāṉ paṭikkireṉ mən oxuyuram
நான் படிக்கிறேன் இல்லை nāṉ paṭikkireṉ illai mən oxumuram deyil

Translation: - I am reading. (Positive statement) - I am not reading. (Negative statement)

Heading level 3: Negating Sentences with Adjectives[redaktə | mənbəni redaktə et]

When negating a sentence with an adjective, the word "இல்லை" (illai) is added after the adjective.

For example:

அவள் மிக பெரிய பொருள் கொண்டவள் avaḷ mik periya poruḷ koṇṭavaḷ o qızın çox böyük malı var
அவள் ஒரு பெரிய பொருள் கொண்டவள் இல்லை avaḷ oru periya poruḷ koṇṭavaḷ illai o qızın böyük malı yoxdur

Translation: - She has a very big property. (Positive statement) - She doesn't have a big property. (Negative statement)

Heading level 3: Negating Sentences with Verbs[redaktə | mənbəni redaktə et]

When negating a sentence with a verb, the word "இல்லை" (illai) is added after the verb.

For example:

Tamil Pronunciation North Azerbaijani
நான் போகிறேன் nāṉ pōkireṉ mən gedirəm
நான் போகிறேன் இல்லை nāṉ pōkireṉ illai mən getmirəm

Translation: - I am going. (Positive statement) - I am not going. (Negative statement)

Heading level 2: Negating Questions in Tamil[redaktə | mənbəni redaktə et]

To negate a question in Tamil, the word "இல்லை" (illai) is added at the end of the sentence.

For example:

நீ வந்தாயா? nī vandhāyā? gəlmişənmi?
நீ வந்தாயா இல்லை? nī vandhāyā illai? gəlməmişən?

Translation: - Did you come? (Positive question) - Didn't you come? (Negative question)
