Overview[edit | edit source]

The conditional mood is used to express hypothetical situations or events that are dependent on certain conditions. It is formed by using the verb stem and adding the appropriate ending. The endings vary depending on the person and number of the subject.

Formation[edit | edit source]

The conditional mood is formed by taking the verb stem and adding the appropriate ending. The endings vary depending on the person and number of the subject.

For example, the verb "biti" (to be) has the following endings:

  • First person singular: bi
  • Second person singular: bi
  • Third person singular: bi
  • First person plural: bili
  • Second person plural: bili
  • Third person plural: bili

So, the conjugation of the verb "biti" in the conditional mood would be:

  • Jaz bi (I would be)
  • Ti bi (You would be)
  • On/ona/ono bi (He/she/it would be)
  • Mi bili (We would be)
  • Vi bili (You would be)
  • Oni bili (They would be)

Usage[edit | edit source]

The conditional mood is used to express hypothetical situations or events that are dependent on certain conditions. For example, it can be used to express wishes, requests, or possibilities.

For example, the sentence "Če bi bil bogat, bi kupil hišo" (If I were rich, I would buy a house) expresses a hypothetical situation that is dependent on the condition of being rich.

It can also be used to express politeness when making requests or suggestions. For example, the sentence "Ali bi lahko pomagal?" (Could you help?) is more polite than the imperative form "Pomagaj!" (Help!).

The conditional mood can also be used to express possibility. For example, the sentence "Mogoče bi lahko šel na počitnice" (Maybe I could go on vacation) expresses the possibility of going on vacation.

Finally, the conditional mood can be used to express regret or disappointment. For example, the sentence "Žal bi moral odpovedati" (Unfortunately, I would have to cancel) expresses regret or disappointment at having to cancel something.
