Slovenian - Grammar- Tenses - Future Tense

Hi Slovenian learners! 😊
In this lesson, we will be discussing the Future Tense in Slovenian grammar. The Future Tense is used to talk about things that will happen in the future. It is a very important tense in all languages, and Slovenian is no exception! After this lesson, you will be able to talk about what you will do tomorrow, next week, or even next year in Slovenian!

Future Tense[edit | edit source]

In Slovenian, the Future Tense is formed by using the auxiliary verb "bo" (shall/will) before the main verb. Here is an example:

Slovenian Pronunciation English
Jaz bom jedel. [jaz bom ye-del] I will eat.

You may also use "bom" as a short form of "bo + jaz" to avoid repetition. Here is an example:

Slovenian Pronunciation English
Bom jedel. [bom ye-del] I will eat.

To form the Future Tense in Slovenian, follow these steps:

1. Take the subject (the person or thing that is doing the action), for example, "jaz" (I). 2. Add the auxiliary verb "bo" (shall/will) 3. Add the main verb in its base form, for example, "jedel" (eat).

Here are some more examples:

Slovenian Pronunciation English
Jaz bom plaval. [jaz bom pla-vaal] I will swim.
Ti boš jedel. [ti bosh ye-del] You will eat.
Ona bo potovala. [ona bo po-to-vaala] She will travel.
Mi bomo pili. [mi bo-mo pee-lee] We will drink.
Vi boste igrali. [vi boste ee-graa-lee] You (plural) will play.
Oni bodo brali. [oni bo-do bra-lee] They will read.

Remember that the verb form does not change based on the gender of the subject.

Irregular Verbs[edit | edit source]

There are some verbs in Slovenian that have an irregular Future Tense. These verbs do not follow the usual pattern of adding "bo" before the main verb.

One of the most common irregular verbs in the Future Tense is "biti" (to be). Instead of "bo biti", we use "bom" or "boš" + "bil" (been). For example:

Slovenian Pronunciation English
Jaz bom bil. [jaz bom bil] I will be.
Ti boš bil. [ti bo-sh bil] You will be.
Ona bo bila. [ona bo bi-la] She will be.
Mi bomo bili. [mi bo-mo bi-li] We will be.
Vi boste bili. [vi boste bi-li] You (plural) will be.
Oni bodo bili. [oni bo-do bi-li] They will be.

Another irregular verb in the Future Tense is "iti" (to go). Instead of "bo iti", we use "šel" (gone) or "šla" (gone) after the subject. For example:

Slovenian Pronunciation English
Jaz bom šel. [jaz bom shal] I will go.
Ti boš šel. [ti bo-sh shal] You will go.
Ona bo šla. [ona bo shla] She will go.
Mi bomo šli. [mi bo-mo shli] We will go.
Vi boste šli. [vi boste shli] You (plural) will go.
Oni bodo šli. [oni bo-do shli] They will go.

There are a few more verbs with irregular Future Tense forms in Slovenian that you will come across as you continue to learn the language.

Optional Particles[edit | edit source]

In Slovenian, there are some optional particles that can be used with the Future Tense to express certainty or uncertainty about the future event. Here are some examples:

  • Zame boš vedno najboljši. (For me, you will always be the best.)
  • Mogoče bom šel v kino. (Maybe I will go to the cinema.)
  • Zagotovo bom šel na večerjo. (I will definitely go to dinner.)

"Zame" (for me) and "mogoče" (maybe) express uncertainty, while "zagotovo" (definitely) expresses certainty. These particles are often used in spoken Slovenian, but can also be written.

Dialogue[edit | edit source]

Marko: Kaj boš delal jutri? (What will you do tomorrow?) Maja: Bom šla na sprehod s svojim psom. (I will go for a walk with my dog.) Marko: Super ideja! (Great idea!) Maja: Hvala. Kaj pa ti? (Thank you. What about you?) Marko: Bom igral košarko s prijatelji. (I will play basketball with friends.) Maja: Zveni zabavno. (Sounds fun.)

Culture Tidbit[edit | edit source]

Did you know that Slovenia is famous for its honey? Slovenian beekeepers preserve the traditional way of keeping bees, allowing them to produce honey of high quality and natural flavor, which is widely appreciated around the world. In 2011, the Slovenian beekeeping tradition was inscribed on the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. So, try some Slovenian honey when you get the chance!
