Possessive "Have"[edit | edit source]

The simplest and most common use of the verb “to have” is to show possession, ownership or inquiring about possessions.

Here are some examples:

Sindhi Pronunciation English
مونکي چاڻو آهيٿَ monkhi chāṇo āhiṭa I have a monkey.
سڀني جيڪاٽ آهن، مونکي خاھ چاڻو آھيو sabbani jakaṭt āhun, monkhi khāh chāṇo āhiyo All are hungry but I have a monkey to eat.
کئيڻ فيتلين اُٿو، کي وڌائن خط ويو keeṇ funētalīn uṭho, kī wadhāin khaṭ wiyu I have a few funerals to attend, so please excuse me.
جو پنھنجي اس گاھ ساڳي چاڻيندڙ آهي jo pnhānjī as gāh sāḳi chāṇindṛo āhi She has five green houses.

In the above examples, چاڻو "chāṇo" is used to express possession essential for the sentence.

Now let's see how "have" is used in questions related to possession.

Questions with "Have"[edit | edit source]

To ask a question about possession, we use the Sindhi verb "چاڻو ٿو ؟" which means "Do you have?". For example:

  • Person 1: ٺي سکڻ نٽ ھڪو، توهان وڌائين ؟ (Ṭī skīn naṭ hakō, tuhān wadhāin? Translation: You don't have a place to live, do you?)
  • Person 2: هوءِڪا، مونکي چاڻو آهيٿو (Ha’īka, monkhi chāṇo āhiṭho. Translation: Yes, I have a monkey.)

Perfect Tense with "Have"[edit | edit source]

The verb "to have" is used as an auxiliary verb to form the perfect tense of Sindhi verbs. The perfect tense describes an action that is completed in the past. It is formed by using "to have" as an auxiliary verb and adding the past participle of the main verb.

Here is an example:

Sindhi Pronunciation English
مينهون ٿيڪيٽ جي پنلي ٻجه اڏانگيو ٿو meinhuṇṇ ṭhīkīṭ jī panlī batajha udangiyo ṭho I have flown an aeroplane many times.
نانھين جيش ڪري پخير کڻي ڏو ٿو، ۾پانھنجي جمعڪاٽي ۾ nānhīn jish kari pakheer kuvhen ḍō ṭho, me papi tamaam ja nasēbo g.o.d nahēn uhuǰhiǰjhi jama’atkarō wapaširanǧǧhē I have not killed a bird since I was a child, in all my sins; I have never returned to my congregation.

In the above examples, the verb چاڻو "chāṇo" is used only for the purpose of possession while "to have" when used as an auxiliary verb brings changes to the tense of the verb and helps make it easier to communicate in a better manner while speaking or writing.

Perfect Progressive Tense with "Have"[edit | edit source]

The perfect progressive tense (also called the present perfect progressive tense) is used to describe a continuous action that started in the past and continues to the present. It is formed by using "to have" as an auxiliary verb in the present perfect tense, and adding the present participle (-ing) of the main verb.

Here are some examples:

Sindhi Pronunciation English
‏هن پهلي جي پيٺ جيم ٿي ڍڻ بر نٽ کان ڏتو ٿو hin phalī jī pīṭh jīm ṭhī čṇ ḍhūṇ bar naṭ kān ḍatō ṭho I have been picking up fruit from the ground since yesterday.
انهن ڪتابن تي مونکي سانان ، وڌو فيڪشن مضمون ۾ پرهيثي. ون جي پانھنجن خطن فروش ٿئو ويندو (Inhin kutāban ti monkhi sānan, wachu fiction mazmoon ma porāthī. Wana ji panihantan khutan‏ phrōsh ṭhio win̄ndo. ) I have been reading these books with a monkey and learning fiction essays. I have sold my first five articles for the idea in the evening paper.

The examples demonstrate that "to have" as an auxiliary verb can affect the tense and structure of a sentence to change the definition of an action.
