Romanian Vocabulary - Count to 10

Hi Romanian learners! 😊
In this lesson, we will learn how to count to 10 in Romanian. Knowing how to count in any language is important, as it helps you communicate with people and solve small everyday problems like buying things or asking for directions. Besides, it is a good way to start learning finding native speakers and making friends. So, let's get started!

Romanian Numbers from 1 to 10[edit | edit source]

Romanian uses a Latin-based alphabet like English, but the pronunciation is slightly different. To help you with the pronunciation, I have included the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) along with the transliteration and Latin script.

Let's learn the numbers from 1 to 10 in Romanian!

Romanian IPA Transliteration English
un un oon one
doi doj dwoy two
trei trej trey three
patru patru pah-troo four
cinci tʃintʃi chin-tchee five
şase ʃase sha-se six
şapte ʃapte sha-pte seven
opt opt o-pt eight
nouă no.u̯ə noo-uh nine
zece ˈzetʃe zeh-che ten

In Romania, numbers are used in a variety of ways in everyday life. For instance, when you go to the market to buy something, you need to know the numbers. When you are gadding around anywhere in Romania, you may come across addresses, phone numbers or even bus routes that require you to know numbers. Knowing numbers is, therefore, unavoidable in Romania.

Here's a dialogue to help you see how you can use some of these words in a real-life situation.

  • Person 1: Câte mere doriți? (How many apples do you want?)
  • Person 2: Doi mere, vă rog. (Two apples, please.)

Fun Facts About Romanian Numbers[edit | edit source]

Did you know that Romanian is the only Romance language that has a two-letter word for "you"? That word is "tu." So, when you want to say "you" in Romanian, you simply say "tu".

In Romanian, the word "unu" (one) is used as a slang word to mean "cool." If something is really interesting or fashionable, Romanians may say, "E unu!"

Romania is the only country in Europe that celebrates "Dragobete" instead of St. Valentine's Day. Dragobete is a traditional Romanian holiday that celebrates love and spring. On this day, young people go to the forest to pick the first flowers of the season and sing traditional love songs.
