Schools in Poland[edit | edit source]

In Poland, children typically start school at the age of 6 and attend primary school (szkoła podstawowa) for 6 years. The next stage of education is secondary school (liceum), which lasts for another 3 years. After finishing liceum and passing the matriculation exam (matura), students can either enter the job market, continue their education in a vocational school or enter university.

Here is some relevant vocabulary to help you navigate the education system in Poland:

Polish Pronunciation English
wychowawca /vɨxɔˈvaft͡sa/ form teacher
klasa /ˈklasa/ classroom
uczeń /ˈut͡ʂɛɲ/ student
nauczyciel /naʊ̯ˈt͡ʂɨt͡ɕɛl/ teacher
lekcja /ˈlɛk͡ʦa/ lesson

Let's listen to a dialogue which takes place in a classroom:

  • Nauczyciel: Dzień dobry, proszę usiąść. (Good morning, please sit down.)
  • Uczeń: Dzień dobry. (Good morning.)
  • Nauczyciel: Dzisiaj będziemy uczyć się historii Polski. (Today we will be learning about the history of Poland.)

  • Nauczyciel: Czy wiecie, kiedy Polska odzyskała niepodległość? (Do you know when Poland regained its independence?)
  • Uczeń: Tak, w 1918 roku. (Yes, in 1918.)

Poland offers a wide range of universities and faculties, welcoming students from all around the world. The most popular Polish universities among international students are the University of Warsaw, Jagiellonian University in Kraków and Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań.

Here is some relevant vocabulary when talking about universities in Poland:

profesor /prɔˈfɛsɔr/ professor
student zagraniczny /ˈstudɛnt zaˈɡranɪt͡ʂnɨ/ international student
