Basic Drinks[edit | edit source]

Javanese people generally drink tea, coffee, water, and milk on a daily basis. Here are the words for these drinks:

céf "chéff" syrup drinks

Tea Time in Javanese Culture[edit | edit source]

Tea is an important part of Javanese culture, and drinking tea is often accompanied by Javanese snacks like fried bananas or cassava chips. Javanese people have a unique and traditional way of serving tea, called "teh poci." The tea is brewed in a clay teapot called "poci," which is heated by embers or a charcoal stove. The tea is served in a small glass with a saucer. The Javanese people believe that putting the dark tea into clear glasses add to the aesthetic experience of taking tea.

Alcoholic Drinks[edit | edit source]

Javanese people are typically Muslim and, thus, refrain from drinking alcohol. However, there are still some local alcoholic drinks that can be found in Java.

tape "tápé" fermented cassava or rice
ciu "chu" distilled fermented drink from sticky rice or molasses
arak "àràk" distilled palm sugar

Drinks at a Warung[edit | edit source]

A "warung" is a small shop or restaurant in Indonesia. Warungs are ubiquitous in Java, and are a popular place to hang out with friends and have a drink.

Here's a dialogue that you might hear when visiting a warung in Java:

  • Person 1: "Saya mau pesan bir dingin dan sebungkus krupuk. Berapa harganya?" ("I want to order a cold beer and a bag of crackers. How much is it?")
  • Person 2 (Waiter): "Baik Pak, bir dingin Rp. 25.000, dan krupuk Rp. 5.000." ("Okay, Sir. A cold beer is Rp. 25,000 and crackers are Rp. 5,000.")

Additional Drinks[edit | edit source]

Javanese cuisine is famous for its traditional drinks, including "jamu," "gula aren," and "wedang uwuh."

Jamu is made from a blend of turmeric, ginger, honey or palm sugar, and tamarind. Jamu is believed to have healing properties and is often drunk to treat minor ailments like bloating and indigestion.

Gula aren is a sugary drink made from palm sugar and water. It is typically served in a small glass with ice.

Wedang uwuh is a Javanese herbal drink made from a variety of spices and herbs like cinnamon, ginger, clove, and lemongrass. This drink is often consumed during rainy season as it is believed to warm up the body.
