Basic Question Words[edit | edit source]

To form questions in Hindi, we use question words like рдХреНрдпрд╛ (kyaa), рдХреМрди (kaun), рдХрд╣рд╛рдБ (kahaan), рдХреИрд╕реЗ (kaise), рдХрд┐рд╕ рддрд░рд╣ (kis tarah), рдХрдм (kab), рдХрд┐рддрдирд╛ (kitna), рдХреМрди рд╕рд╛ (kaun saa), рдХреМрди рд╕реЗ (kaun se). These question words can be used to ask questions related to persons, actions, things, places, time, quantity, quality, and manner.

Here are a few examples:

Hindi Pronunciation English
рдХреНрдпрд╛? kyaa? what?
рдХреМрди? kaun? who?
рдХрд╣рд╛рдБ? kahaan? where?
рдХреИрд╕реЗ? kaise? how?
рдХрд┐рд╕ рддрд░рд╣? kis tarah? how?
рдХрдм? kab? when?
рдХрд┐рддрдирд╛? kitna? how much?
рдХреМрди рд╕рд╛? kaun saa? which?
рдХреМрди рд╕реЗ? kaun se? which?

Making Questions with Verbs[edit | edit source]

In Hindi, we can make a basic question by adding the helper verb рдХреНрдпрд╛ (kyaa) before the main verb. This type of question is called рдХреНрдпрд╛ рд╕рд╡рд╛рд▓ (kyaa savaal).

We can also make questions by adding a question word at the beginning of a sentence, and then follow it with the subject and the verb. For example:

  • рддреБрдо рдХрд╣рд╛рдБ рдЬрд╛ рд░рд╣реЗ рд╣реЛ? (tum kahaan jaa rahe ho?) means where are you going?
  • рдореИрдВ рдХреИрд╕реЗ рдХрд░реВрдБ? (main kaise karoon?) means how should I do it?

Here are a few more examples:

Hindi Pronunciation English
рдХреНрдпрд╛ рддреБрдо рдЦрд╛рдУрдЧреЗ? kyaa tum khaaoge? Will you eat?
рдХреНрдпрд╛ рдЙрд╕рдиреЗ рдХреБрдЫ рдмрддрд╛рдпрд╛? kyaa usne kuch bataaya? Did he tell anything?
рдХреНрдпрд╛ рддреБрдореНрд╣реЗрдВ рднреВрдЦ рд▓рдЧреА рд╣реИ? kyaa tumhen bhookh lagi hai? Are you hungry?

Types of Questions[edit | edit source]

In Hindi, questions can be classified into five types.

1. рдЬрд╛рддрд┐ (Jati) Questions[edit | edit source]

рдЬрд╛рддрд┐ (jati) questions are those that require a 'yes' or 'no' answer. In Hindi, we can add the word 'рдХреНрдпрд╛' (kyaa) at the beginning of a statement to convert it into a jati question. For example:

  • рддреБрдо рдШрд░ рдЬрд╛рддреЗ рд╣реЛред (tum ghar jaate ho.) means you go home.
  • рдХреНрдпрд╛ рддреБрдо рдШрд░ рдЬрд╛рддреЗ рд╣реЛ? (kyaa tum ghar jaate ho?) means do you go home?

2. рдХрд╛рд░реНрдп (Kary) Questions[edit | edit source]

рдХрд╛рд░реНрдп (kary) questions are those that require a question word like рдХреИрд╕реЗ (kaise), рдХреНрдпреЛрдВ (kyon), рдХрдм (kab), etc. For example:

  • рддреБрдо рдХреИрд╕реЗ рдЦреБрд╢ рд░рд╣рддреЗ рд╣реЛ? (tum kaise khush rahte ho?) means how do you stay happy?
  • рдЙрд╕рдиреЗ рдХрдм рдЦрд╛рдирд╛ рдЦрд╛рдпрд╛? (usne kab khaana khaaya?) means when did he eat?

3. рд╡рд┐рд╕реНрддрд╛рд░ (Vistaar) Questions[edit | edit source]

рд╡рд┐рд╕реНрддрд╛рд░ (vistaar) questions are those that require a detailed response. These questions usually start with 'рдХреИрд╕реЗ' (kaise) or 'рдХреМрди рд╕рд╛' (kaun saa) and are often used to ask about a specific event or situation. For example:

  • рддреБрдо рдХреИрд╕реЗ рдлрд┐рдЯ рд░рд╣рддреЗ рд╣реЛ? (tum kaise fit rahte ho?) means how do you stay fit?
  • рдХреМрди рд╕реЗ рдлрд▓ рдЦрд╛рдиреЗ рдЪрд╛рд╣рд┐рдП? (kaun se phal khaane chaahiye?) means which fruits should we eat?

4. рд╕реНтАНрд╡рдпрдВрднреВ (Svaym-bho) Questions[edit | edit source]

рд╕реНтАНрд╡рдпрдВрднреВ (svaym-bho) questions are those that answer their own questions. For example:

  • рд╣рдо рд╕рднреА рдЗрдВрд╕рд╛рди рд╣реИрдВ, рди? (hum sabhee insaan hain, na?) means we are all human, right?

5. рд╕рдВрдпреБрдХреНрдд (Sanyukt) Questions[edit | edit source]

рд╕рдВрдпреБрдХреНрдд (sanyukt) questions are those that join multiple questions together using the conjunction "рдФрд░" (aur). For example:

  • рддреБрдореНрд╣рд╛рд░рд╛ рдирд╛рдо рдХреНрдпрд╛ рд╣реИ? рддреБрдо рдХрд╣рд╛рдБ рд░рд╣рддреЗ рд╣реЛ? (tumhaara naam kyaa hai? tum kahaan rahte ho?) means what is your name? Where do you live? can be rephrased as рддреБрдореНрд╣рд╛рд░рд╛ рдирд╛рдо рдХреНрдпрд╛ рд╣реИ рдФрд░ рддреБрдо рдХрд╣рд╛рдБ рд░рд╣рддреЗ рд╣реЛ? (tumhaara naam kyaa hai aur tum kahaan rahte ho?)

Dialogue[edit | edit source]

Here's a simple conversation to help you understand the usage of questions:

  • Person 1: рдЖрдЬ рдардВрдб рдирд╣реАрдВ рд╣реЛ рд░рд╣реА рд╣реИред (aaj thand nahi ho rahi hai.) (It's not getting cold today.)
