Adjectives Degrees in Georgian

Adjectives have three degrees:

  1. neutral,
  2. superlative (“more”)
  3. and minimal (“less”).

Take a moment to explore these relevant pages as you conclude this lesson: The Conjugation System, Future Tense, Conjugation of the verb “to know” ცოდნა & Gender.

The superlative is produced by affixes “უ---ესი” and less degree is produced by affixes “მო---ო”[edit | edit source]

Neutral  Superlative  Minimal
თეთრი (“white”) უთეთრესი (“whiter”) მოთეთრო (“less white”)
მწვანე (“green”) უმწვანესი (“greener”) მომწვანო (“less green”)
წითელი (“red”) უწითლესი (“redder”) მოწითალო (“less red”)

Some adjectives ending on “-ილ-” and “-ელ-” lose these letters[edit | edit source]

Neutral  Superlative  Minimal
ტკბილი (“sweet”) უ-ტკბ-ესი (“sweeter”) მო-ტკბ-ო (“sweetest”)
გრძელი (“long”) უ-გრძ-ესი (“longer”) მო-გრძ-ო (“longest”)

The two adjectives “good” კარგი and “bad” ცუდი produce the degrees by changing their forms[edit | edit source]

Neutral  Superlative  Minimal
კარგი (“good”) უკეთესი (“better”) საუკეთესო (“best”)
ცუდი (“bad”) უარესი (“worse”) (only has superlative)
