Basic vocabulary[edit | edit source]

Before we dive into the grammar of giving opinions, let's review some basic vocabulary:

Faroese Pronunciation English
Mín skoðan er... [min ˈskɔɪan ɛr] My opinion is...
Eg halda... [ɛk ˈhalfa] I think...
Eg telji... [ɛk ˈtɛlji] I believe...
Mær dámar... [maɪr ˈdaːmar] I like...
Mær líkar... [maɪr ˈliːkar] I enjoy...

These phrases will come in handy when expressing your opinion. Now, let's move on to the grammar!

Giving your opinion[edit | edit source]

Giving your opinion in Faroese is relatively simple. All you need to do is start your sentence with one of the phrases from the vocabulary section, followed by your opinion and then end the sentence with the verb "at vera" (to be). Let's see some examples:

  • Mín skoðan er, at Føroyar eru vakrar. (My opinion is that the Faroe Islands are beautiful.)
  • Eg halda, at hesin bók er góð. (I think that this book is good.)
  • Eg telji, at tað er gott fyri tær at fara út í náttúruna. (I believe that it is good for you to go out into nature.)
  • Mær dámar, at Føroyar hava so nógv at byða. (I like that the Faroe Islands have so much to offer.)
  • Mær líkar, at týdningurin í hesi søguni er djúpur. (I enjoy that the meaning in this story is deep.)

Notice how all the sentences follow the same order: opinion + verb "at vera". This structure is what makes giving your opinion in Faroese easy.

Agreement[edit | edit source]

In Faroese, when you give your opinion, you need to agree in gender and number with the subject. For example:

  • Mín skoðan er, at bókurnar eru góðar. (My opinion is that the books are good.)
  • Mín skoðan er, at bókina er góð. (My opinion is that the book is good.)

In the first example, we used the plural form "bókurnar" to agree with the subject "books". In the second example, we used the singular form "bókina" to agree with the subject "book". This is an important aspect of giving your opinion in Faroese and will help you make your sentences more precise and accurate.

Examples in context[edit | edit source]

To help you better understand how to use these phrases in context, here's a dialogue:

  • Person 1: Eg halda, at árin í Føroyum eru serliga góð. (I think that the years in the Faroe Islands are particularly good.)
  • Person 2: Ja, Mær dámar, at vit hava fyrireikingar til at hava góð ár. (Yes, I like that we have preparations for having good years.)
  • Person 1: Jú, og eg telji, at tað er eitt tekin av tí farligt góða samstarvinum okkara. (Yes, and I believe that it is a sign of our very good cooperation.)
  • Person 2: Ein tann síðsti árin hava verið serliga spennandi. (The last few years have been particularly exciting.)
  • Person 1: Jú, eg líka gott, at vit ikki verða at hvørja okkum fyri hvussu tær ganga. (Yes, I also like that we don't have to worry about how they're going to be.)
  • Person 2: Tað hevði ikki verið so gott, um vit máttu betala fyri alt sum komað var av boðum. (It wouldn't have been so good if we had to pay for everything that was offered.)

As you can see, giving your opinion in Faroese can make for interesting and engaging conversations. Don't be afraid to express yourself!
