In this lesson, we will learn some useful Croatian vocabulary related to drinks. Whether you are going out to a bar with friends or just want to ask for something to drink, these words and phrases will be helpful to know. Let's get started! Beverages[edit | edit source]

Croatian people are coffee lovers, there is a great tradition of drinking coffee at cafes. While "kava" (coffee) is the most popular drink, Croatian people also like tea, hot chocolate, and other hot beverages. In Croatia, beer and wine are widespread alcoholic beverages; however, the country also produces spirits such as brandy and liqueurs.

Here are some common beverages in Croatia:

vruća čokolada /ʋrǔːt͡ɕa t͡ʃɔ̌kɔlada/ hot chocolate

Kava dolazi: A coffee is coming! Oprostite, želio bih čaj. : Excuse me, I would like a tea. Volio bih vruću čokoladu, molim. : I would like a hot chocolate, please.

Alcoholic drinks[edit | edit source]

In Croatia, you can find a wide range of domestic as well as imported alcoholic drinks. Some of the most popular alcoholic beverages are beer, wine, and rakija (brandy). Rakija is a traditional Croatian spirit made from fermented fruit.

Here are some common alcoholic drinks in Croatia:

rakija /ˈrâkija/ brandy

Htio bih pivo, molim. : I would like a beer, please. Daj mi čašu vina, molim te. : Give me a glass of wine, please. Rakija mi se sviđa, hvala. : I like brandy, thank you.

Soft drinks[edit | edit source]

Soft drinks are popular in Croatia, especially during summer. People enjoy them at cafes, restaurants, by the beach or with a meal. Apart from the famous Coca-Cola, Croatia has its popular brand of carbonated drinks. You can just ask for "sok" if you want a non-alcoholic beverage.

Here are some common Croatian soft drinks:

Daj mi Coca-colu, molim. : Give me a Coca Cola, please. Volim Fantu. : I like Fanta. Hoćeš li sok? : Do you want a soft drink?

Hot beverages[edit | edit source]

Croatia has very cold winters, so it's not uncommon to warm up with hot alcoholic drinks during winter festivals. The most popular drinks are warm beer and mulled wine. Hot rakija with honey and spices is also served in many towns and villages. Tea and hot chocolate are also popular during the winter months.

Here are some popular hot beverages in Croatia:
