այս, այդ and այն[edit | edit source]
There are two sets of demonstrative pronouns in Armenian. The first set of pronounces are այս, այդ and այն.

| Այն | That (over there) |
These pronounce are always used with a noun that they refer to. For instance:
1) Այս ավտոբուսը մեծ է: This bus is large.
2) Այդ գուլպան փոքր է: That sock is small.
3) Այն շապիկը հին է: The other shirt (the one over there) is old.
The above demonstrative pronouns can be used with both singular and plural nouns.
1) Այս գոտին երկար է։ This belt is long.
2) Այս գոտիները երկար են։ These belts are long. Nouns used with demonstrative pronouns above always have definite article.
սա and դա[edit | edit source]
The second set of demonstrative pronouns is սա and դա which are used as nouns.

| Այն մեկը | The other one |
1) Սա ավտոբուս է։ This is a bus.
2) Դա գոտի է։ That is a belt.
3) Այն մեկը շիշ է։ The other one is a bottle.
These demonstrative pronouns have different forms for singular and plural nouns.
սա - this
դա - that
այն մեկը - the other one
սրանք - these
դրանք - those
այն մյուսները - the other ones

Այն մեկը գիրք է։ The other one is a book.
Այն մյուսները վերարկուներ են։ The other ones are coats.
Այն մեկը բաժա՞կ է։ Is the other one a cup?
Ոչ, այն մեկը խնձոր է։ No, the other one is an apple.
Սա խնձոր է։ This is an apple.
Իսկ դա տանձ է։ And that is a pear.
Սա տուն է, իսկ դա խանութ է։ This is a house and that is a store.

Look at the dialogue below to observe the uses of the singular and plural of these demonstrative pronouns:
Սա ի՞նչ է: What is this?
Սա մատիտ է։ This is a pencil.
Իսկ սա ի՞նչ է։ And what is this?
Դա գիրք է: That is a book.
Դա ի՞նչ է: What is that?
Սա գոտի է: This is a belt.
Սրանք ի՞նչ են։ What are these?
Դրանք շապիկներ են։ Those are shirts.
Սա կոշիկ չէ։ This is not a shoe.
Այո, դա կոշիկ չէ։ Yes, that is not a shoe.
Դա հա՞ց է։ Is that bread?
Այո, սա հաց է։ Yes, this is bread.
