The Instrumental Case in Armenian

Rule

The instrumental case is used when in English we would use the prepositions “by” and “with” to answer the questions ինչո՞վ - “by what?”, ումո՞վ - “by whom?”, ինչո՞վ -“with what? The case is formed in the following way:

Sentences

Here are sentences that use nouns in instrumental case:

1) Գոռը միշտ մեքենայով է գալիս Երևան: Gor always comes to Yerevan by car.

2) Նրանք գնում են ինքնաթիռով: They are going by plane.

3) Մենք պաշտպանվում ենք մեր զենքերով։ We defend ourselves with our arms.

As these examples show, nouns in instrumental case are usually placed before the verb. Words ending with the suffix -ություն have an additional way to form the instrumental case: they change the suffix -ություն to to the ending -ությամբ.

1) Նա քաջությամբ գերազանցեց բոլորին։ She exceeded everyone with courage.

2) Դու համբերությամբ լսում ես մարդկանց։ You patiently listen to people.

Words with ու declension

Words with ու declension form their instrumental by dropping the ի at the end of the word and adding վա to the word stem. For example, քամի - քամով, գինի - գինով, օղի - օղով, ոսկի - ոսկով etc.

1) Դուք վճարում եք ոսկով։ You pay with gold.

2) Վրացիները հպարտանում են իրենց գինով։ Georgians are proud of their wine

Words with վա declension

Words with վա declension form their instrumental by adding -ով to the word stem. For example, օր - օրով, ամիս - ամսով, շաբաթ - շաբաթով etc.

1) Ես քեզնից երեք օրով մեծ եմ։ I am older than you with three days.

2) Նրանք հինք շաբաթով գալիս են Հայաստան։ They are coming to Armenia for five weeks. There are many other uses of the instrumental case. The following chart contains a few examples:

• through Դու քայլում ես փողոցով։ You walk through the street.
• for a period of time Նրանք տասն օրով են գնում Կանադա: They are going to Canada for ten days.
• indicates manner Նա իր ընկերոջը հաճույքով է նկարագրում։ He describes his friend with pleasure.

Some phrases such as “to be proud of”, “to be interested in” and “because of” that do not require prepositions“with” or “by” are translated by words in instrumental in Armenian. Here are a few examples:

1) Նա հպարտանում է իր մեքենայով։ She is proud of her car.

2) Գործարարները հետաքրքրվում են գործարանով։ The businessmen are interested in the factory.

3) Նա հոգնում է դժվար աշխատանքի պատճառով։ He gets tired because of heavy work.
