What is the obligatory mood?

In Armenian, the obligatory mood indicates actions that must be performed. Obligatory mood has 2 tenses: future and past.

Future tense

The future tense is formed by placing the word պետք է or պիտի “must” before a verb in the future subjunctive. Here is the conjugation of the word նկարել - “to paint.”

Singular	Plural
Ես պետք է նկարեմ:	Մենք պետք է նկարենք:
Դու պետք է նկարես:	Դուք պետք է նկարեք:
Նա պետք է նկարի:	Նրանք պետք է նկարեն:

Examples

1) Նա պետք է լվանա իմ շորերը: She must wash my clothes.

2) Նա պետք է վճարի սուրճի համար։ She must pay for the coffee.

The future obligatory can be used both for actions that one must perform far in the future and at present.

1) Հիմա ես պետք է գնամ։ I must go now.

2) Այժմ դու պետք է ավլես հատակը։ You must sweep the floor now.

Negative

The negative of future tense in obligatory mood is formed by the expression չպետք է “must not”.

Singular	Plural
Ես չպետք է նկարեմ։	Մենք չպետք է նկարենք։
Դու չպետք է նկարես։	Դուք չպետք է նկարեք։
Նա չպետք է նկարի։	Նրանք չպետք է նկարեն։

Examples

Here are two examples:

1) Նա չպետք է նկարի պատին։ She must not paint on the wall.

2) Մենք չպետք է վճարենք սուրճի համար։ We must not pay for the coffee.

Notice that the sentence “Ես պետք է չնկարեմ։” is also grammatically correct. It means almost the same as “Ես չպետք է նկարեմ”, however, this is not a sentence in negative future. It is affirmative. The sentence affirms that I must do something, namely not paint.

To convey the idea that one is obliged to do something one can also use words like ստիպված լինել - “to be compelled”, “to be obliged”, “to have to”, հարկադրված լինել - “to obliged”, and պարտավոր լինել- “to have the duty of.”

Here are a few examples:

1) Դու ստիպված ես ավարտել գործը։ You have to finish the work.

2) Նա հարկադրված էր սպասել ձեզ։ She is obliged to wait for you.

3) Ես պարտավոր եմ նկարել քեզ։ It is my duty to paint you.
