Algerian Arabic Vocabulary - Count to 10

Hi Algerian Arabic learners! 😊
In this lesson, you will learn how to count to 10 in Algerian Arabic. Knowing numbers is important for everyday communication, especially in transactions and time-telling. So let's get started!

Take some time to dive into these other pages after completing this lesson: Say Hello and Greetings in Algerian Arabic, Basic Phrases in Algerian Arabic, Time & Problems in Algerian Arabic.

Numbers 1-10[edit | edit source]

Algerian Arabic uses a unique number system, which is different from both Modern Standard Arabic and French. Here are the numbers 1-10 in Algerian Arabic:

Algerian Arabic Pronunciation English
واحد wahed one
زوج zawj two
تلاتة tlata three
أربعة arba'a four
خمسة khamsa five
ستة setta six
سبعة seb'a seven
تمنية tmenya eight
تسعة tes3a nine
عشرة 3ashra ten

Now let's see these numbers in context.

Dialogue:

  • Person 1: راح يكون الوقت زحمة، كم عندو النهاردي؟ (ra7 ykun lwaqt zhamma, kam 3andu nhar elli yetla3?) (It's going to be busy, what's the date today?)
  • Person 2: النهاردي تلاتة آورا. (ennaharda tlata 3awaara) (Today is the third of the month.)

In another situation:

  • Person 1: كم تبيع الخبز؟ (kam tbi3 elkhubz?) (How much is the bread?)
  • Person 2: وحدة الخبز ب20 دج. (wahda lkhobz b20 dj) (One bread is 20 Algerian dinars.)

Notice that when Algerians count money and prices, they say the number and the currency together. Also notice that in spoken Algerian Arabic, some numbers have different pronunciation than in MSA, for instance: "tlata" instead of "thalatha" for "three", "tmenya" instead of "thamaniya" for "eight".
