You're right. There is no sense in it. Like in English, in French there are several tenses that express the past: the 'imparfait', the 'passé simple', or the 'passé composé'¶

      The 'imparfait is usually used:¶
      -for habitual or repeated actions¶
-to describe a general physical or mental state of being¶
-to describe an ongoing action with no specified completion¶

      The 'passé composé'¶
-expresses one or more events or actions that began and ended in the past¶
-talks about a single event, or an event that happened a specific number of times¶
-indicates a change in physical or mental state at a precise moment or for an isolated cause¶

The 'passé simple'. Nowadays it's used primarily in formal, literary, and historical writings to express a completed past action, event, or situation. In conversation and informal writing, the passé composé is used instead of the passé simple to express the past. However, French people with elevated language continue to use it when they speak.¶
