I've never saw this expression before. Is it only old book one (I found it in a book by Alexandre Dumas)
or still it is in use?
It stands for exact particular thing.
Thank you in advance!

AussieInBgJune 2021 Yes, it is definitely still used in British English. Specifically, ”a fortnight’s leave” is a period of two weeks permitted and paid absence from work/military for a holiday and so on. In general ”fortnight” is very commonly used in British English. In American English, ”fortnight” is becoming archaic language. Not so long ago, an American ESL teacher asked me what ”fortnight” meant! |
AussieInBgJune 2021 British English is generally more complex - both lexographically and grammatically - than American English.
The evolutionary direction of each has obvious advantages and disadvantages.
What do you think?
victor_onlJune 2021 Thank you =) I think British English still keeping the language richness as much as it’s possible!
exRangerJune 2021 On the topic of complexity re: American vs. British (English) It depends on / varies with the speaker... education, societal/class stratum, and other factors. I know Brits from London, Birmingham, Manchester and Glasgow (Scotland) whose general level of English is abysmal -- they are terrible spellers, terrible writers and even their oral skills leave much to be desired. Then again I know Americans whose level of English comprehension and ”polish” is on a par with, say, Evelyn Waugh. The best English IMO is found in three Irishmen: Beckett, Wilde and Joyce. But I digress. English is ”all over the map” as far as what’s proper, what’s improper, what’s archaic and/or otherwise. Throw in American RAP culture ”English” and everyone in USA, UK and probably OZ ”be soundin’ like Tupac yo.” That, my friends, is the state of Things English in 2021. Merci beaucoup, exRanger |
victor_onlJune 2021 Thank you very much
will_stewaJune 2021 It is archaic in America. We use Two weeks leave. |
victor_onlJune 2021 Thank you, I think that simplicity is a good thing, one can express oneself understandable for everyone without implications =)
Goldyy6July 2021 For many students, writing a college essay can be a really daunting task college essay writer. Therefore, they think to themselves ‘Will anyone write essay for me?’. |
