Here are some examples of English definitions of “paper” and “article”:

Paper - material manufactured in thin sheets from the pulp of wood or other fibrous substances, used for writing, drawing, or printing on, or as wrapping material.
”a sheet of paper”

OR

Paper - an essay or thesis, especially one read at an academic lecture or seminar or published in an academic journal.
”he published a highly original paper on pattern formation”

And for Article:

Article- a particular item or object.
”small household articles”

OR

Article- a piece of writing included with others in a newspaper, magazine, or other publication.
”an article about middle-aged executives”

But if I can simplify all of that. The common understanding in the general public is that paper is something you write on (sheet or piece of paper) or something you write for schooling (an assignment) whereas an article is usually something someone writes that is published in the newspaper, online, in a book and etc.

"Paper" has a broader meaning, and can be used to describe an article, essay, dissertation, or document. "Article" is a written composition, usually nonfiction, on a specific topic, normally as part of a book or other publication (for example a newspaper or magazine).
