What is different between paper and article?

"Paper" has a broader meaning, and can be used to describe an article, essay, dissertation, or document. "Article" is a written composition, usually nonfiction, on a specific topic, normally as part of a book or other publication (for example a newspaper or magazine).

These words are equivalents and both qualify a text published in an academic journal, but I think paper is less formal than article.
