    • Using netiquette is important because online communication usually doesn’t give us a chance to express non-verbal signs that help us understand each other in a real-life face-to-face conversation.
    • For example, the impossibility to hear a tone of voice, see body gestures and facial expressions can lead to misinterpretation of our message.
    • Especially when someone likes to write in a sarcastic manner and add some humor.
    • Also, it’s crucial to do not become personal in hot discussions about politics or religion as we better don’t do that in a real life.
    • We also don’t know if a person from the other side of our screens was victims of racism, physical violence, etc. So it’s better to discuss those themes carefully or even avoid them.
  • The consequences of bad netiquette in an online learning environment are that someone may be offended or outraged by someone else’s rudeness or familiarity.
    • Even the person does not mean to harm anyone if he or she is not familiar with rules for online communication and does not know how other people perceive their TEXTS THAT ARE WRITTEN IN CAPS LOCK they may come across as impolite and too informal.

    • When I was addressed with unconstructive criticism from one of my peers who gave bad grades for all aspects and wrote only one overall comment ”well done!” I was indignant.
    • I didn’t know what to do with my text, how can I improve it, and what exactly was wrong.
    • I didn’t receive feedback about the previous week’s writing assignment yet, but I received feedback on discussion forum posts.
  • Most of them are fair and give me an understanding of what can be done better.
    • For example one of my peers pointed out that I didn’t make connections with the story we have read, what lessons I took from the story, and how I will apply those lessons during my studies at university.
    • Even all of those elements I mentioned in my discussion post I understand that next time I need to make them more clear.
