Abstract
- The aim of this study is to make a comparison between the regulatory framework and the common practice concerning Maritime English in the fields of learning and use of such a variety.
- This comparison is directed at understanding the variables and identifying the issues that lead to the divergence of the two.
- Thereafter, this work will try, with the help of a survey, to investigate the way in which these issues interlink with the Italian Maritime English Teaching system and to delve deeper into the perception that seafarers have of this matter.
- The thesis is made up of five chapters.
- The first one introduces the historical premises and the regulatory framework that have made Maritime English the global seafaring language.
- The second one gives a definition of what Maritime English is, illustrates its main characteristics and makes a comparison between linguistic standards and everyday speech acts.
- The third chapter lists the official requirements concerning seafarers’ communicative competence and analyses how they are currently applied in Maritime Institutes and learning centers.
- The fourth chapter deals with the concepts of human factor and effective communication and with how they are connected with accidents in the maritime field, trying to find a solution to these issues in the assessment practices.
- The fifth and last chapter presents the results of the survey mentioned above.
