  • Traffic jams

    • It is known that over the past few decades, the quantity of cars in cities has increased dramatically, which, unfortunately, lead to a traffic jams and a number of problems related to this concern such as air pollution, wastage of time and others.
  • Some people argue that the best way to solve this problem is the reconstruction of old roads to make them wider.
    • Other claims that there are other more advantageous methods.
    • Both sides of the argument will be analyzed before a logical conclusion is drawn and my own perspective is given.
    • Not surprisingly, some people believe that the best way to overcome traffic jams is the expanding of old roads to the required sizes.
  • In defense of this opinion, it can be said that this method is really capable of solving traffic problems in large cities.
    • According to statistics that has been provided by the World Association of the Road Constructors, nowadays, the width of 32% of roads does not correspond to the amount of traffic, after the reconstruction of which, only 11% of them will again form traffic jams.
    • And this is an excellent example, demonstrating the importance of expanding roads in the fight against traffic jams in cities.
    • Considering the problem of traffic jams from a different angle, it is worth noting that reconstruction is not always could be an optimal solution.
  • In contrast to positive qualities, it is necessary to highlight the negative, namely high cost, long duration of work coupled with additional temporary inconveniences for road users, as well as in some cases the impossibility of its implementation due to a number of restrictions.
  • For example, other existing modern ways of struggling with traffic jams, such as optimizing the traffic lights, using navigators warning of the overloaded sections of the road, give a positive result at minimal cost.
  • In conclusion, taking everything into account, I am convinced that expanding roads is good but not the best way to eliminate traffic jams.
    • This is because neither is it believed that this method is optimal solution that gives fast results, nor is this could be always implemented.
