As a Romanian language teacher with 20 years of experience, I know that learning a new language is a thrilling experience. Romanian is an interesting language and Romania is a country of stark contrasts, which makes learning more fun. In this lesson, we will focus on basic conjunctions in the Romanian language.

Conjunctions are an essential part of any language because they help connect words, phrases, and clauses. In Romanian, there are different types of conjunctions, such as coordinating conjunctions, subordinating conjunctions, and correlative conjunctions. In this lesson, we will focus on the most basic conjunctions which include and, or, but, and because.

Coordinating Conjunctions

Coordinating conjunctions are conjunctions that can join elements of equal importance in a sentence. The Romanian language has seven coordinating conjunctions, but we will focus on the ones that are considered the most basic.

Și (And)

This conjunction is used to connect elements that are alike or similar in a sentence.

Example:

Romanian Pronunciation English
Mănânc mere și pere mənɨŋk mɛre ʃi ˈpere I eat apples and pears
Câinele și pisica sunt prieteni ˈkɨnelje ʃi ˈpiska sunt priˈetenʲ The dog and the cat are friends

Sau (Or)

This conjunction is used to connect elements that are dissimilar or to make a choice between two things.

Example:

Romanian Pronunciation English
Merg la plajă sau la munte merɡ la ˈplaʒə sau la ˈmunte I'm going to the beach or to the mountains
Alegi să bei apă sau suc? aˈled͡ʒi sə beɪ apə sau suk Are you choosing to drink water or juice?

Dar (But)

This conjunction is used to connect two elements that express a contrast or opposition.

Example:

Romanian Pronunciation English
Vreau să merg la film, dar sunt obosit vraʊ sə merɡ la film, dar sunt oboˈsit I want to go to the movies, but I am tired
El vorbește română, dar nu înțelege tot el vorˈbeʃte roˈmɨnə, dar nu ɨntseˈled͡ʒe tot He speaks Romanian, but he doesn't understand everything

Pentru că (Because)

This conjunction is used to express a cause-and-effect relationship between two events.

Example:

Romanian Pronunciation English
Nu vin la petrecere pentru că sunt bolnav nu vin la petreˈt͡ʃere pentru kə sunt bolˈnav I'm not coming to the party because I am sick
A ieșit din casă mai devreme pentru că să ajungă la timp la concert a ˈjeʃit dɨn kaˈʃə mai deˈvreme pentru kə sə aˈʒuŋɡə la timp la konˈt͡ʃert He left the house earlier because he wants to arrive on time at the concert

Conclusion

Learning basic conjunctions are important because they give the sentences context and express ideas more precisely. In this lesson, we have covered the four most basic conjunctions in the Romanian language. Keep practicing and you will soon master them.
