Indefinite pronouns are words used to refer to people, places, or things in a non-specific way. They are called indefinite because they do not refer to a specific person or thing. In Portuguese, indefinite pronouns are used to generalize or refer to an unknown or arbitrary thing. In this lesson, we will learn about the most common indefinite pronouns used in Portuguese.

Indefinite Pronouns

Algum/Alguns/Alguma/Algumas

"Algum" means "some" in English. It is used to indicate a non-specific amount. It can also mean "any" when used in negative sentences.

Nenhum/Nenhuns/Nenhuma/Nenhumas

"Nenhum" means "none" or "not any" in English. It is used in negative sentences to indicate that there is no amount of something. It can also be used as an adjective.

Todo/Todos/Toda/Todas

"Todo" means "all" or "every" in English. It is used to indicate the totality of something.

Outro/Outros/Outra/Outras

"Outro" means "other" or "another" in English. It is used to indicate something different than what was previously mentioned.

Prepositions

Prepositions are words that describe the relationship between a noun or pronoun and other words in a sentence. In Portuguese, prepositions are used to indicate position, location, direction, and time. Here are some common prepositions used in Portuguese:

A

"A" means "to" or "at" in English. It is used to describe the location of a place or the person to whom an action is directed.

Examples:

  • Eu vou a praia (I am going to the beach)
  • O livro pertence a ela (The book belongs to her)

De

"De" means "of" or "from" in English. It is used to describe possession, origin, or association.

Examples:

  • A blusa é de algodão (The blouse is made of cotton)
  • Eu vim de São Paulo (I came from São Paulo)

Em

"Em" means "in" or "on" in English. It is used to describe position or location.

Examples:

Com
