In this lesson, you will learn the different question words in Standard Arabic and their usage. As a beginner, understanding question words is vital for effective communication in Arabic. So, let's dive in.

Heading level 2: Wh- question words

Wh- question words are used to inquire about specific information. Here are the different Wh- question words in Standard Arabic along with their translations.

ماذا؟ Mada? What?
متى؟ Mata? When?
أيّن؟ Ayna? Where?
لمَ؟ Lima? Why?
كم؟ Kam? How many? / How much?

Note: to answer a Wh- question, you need the corresponding Wa- question word.

Heading level 2: Wa- question words

Wa- question words are used to answer Wh- question words. Here are the different Wa- question words in Standard Arabic along with their translations.

هُمَا Humaa They are (dual)
هُمْ Hum They are (plural)
أَنْتَ Anta You (masculine singular) are

أَنْتُمْ Antum You (masculine or feminine plural) are
أَنَا Ana I am
نَحْنُ Nahnu We are

Heading level 2: Examples

Here are some examples to help you understand the usage of question words in Arabic.

  • Wh- question word example: متَى تَذْهَبُونَ إِلَى المَسْجِد؟ (Mata tadhabouna ila almasjid?) Translation: When do you go to the mosque?
  • Wa- question word example: أَنَا أُحِبُّ القِراءَةَ. مَا هُوَ هِوَايَتُكَ؟ (Ana uhibbu alqiraata. Mada huwa hobbok?) Translation: I like reading. What is your hobby?

Now that you have familiarized yourself with the question words, try practicing on your own using these examples:

  1. ماذا تُريدُ أَنْ تَأْكُلَ؟ (Mada turidu an ta'kul?) Translation: What do you want to eat?
  2. كَمْ عُمْرُكَ؟ (Kam omrouka?) Translation: How old are you?
  3. مَنْ يَعْمَلُ فِي زَوْجَتِكَ؟ (Man ya'malu fi zawjatika?) Translation: Who works in your wife's office?
