In Gujarati, "be" is not always translated as "be" in English. We have different forms of "be" based on the subject of the sentence.

The conjugation of "be" in Gujarati is based on the subject of the sentence. Here are the different forms of "be" in Gujarati:

હું છું hun chhu I am
તું છે tun che You are (singular)
તે છે te che He/She/It is
અમે છીએ ame chhiye We are
તમે છો tame cho You are (plural)
તેઓ છે teo che They are

The conjugation of "be" also changes based on the tense of the sentence. Here are the different tenses of "be" in Gujarati:

To form affirmative sentences using "be" in Gujarati, simply conjugate the verb based on the subject and add it after the subject. Here are some examples:

તું છે સુંદર tun che sundar You are beautiful
તે છે વૈદ્ય te che vaidya He/She is a doctor

તેઓ છે ચાલીસા teo che chalisaa They are forty

To form negative sentences using "be" in Gujarati, simply add "નથી" (nathi) after the conjugated verb. Here are some examples:

હું નથી ગુજરાતી hun nathi Gujarati I am not Gujarati
તું નથી સુંદર tun nathi sundar You are not beautiful
તે નથી વૈદ્ય te nathi vaidya He/She is not a doctor

તમે નથી ખુશ tame nathi khush You are not happy
તેઓ નથી ચાલીસા teo nathi chalisaa They are not forty

Dialogue:

  • Person 1: તમે શું છો? (tame shu cho?) (What are you?)
  • Person 2: હું એક વિદ્યાર્થી છું. (hun ek vidyaarthi chhu.) (I am a student.)

Dialogue:

  • Person 1: તમે ક્યાં છો? (tame kyaa chho?) (Where are you?)
  • Person 2: હું ઘરે છું. (hun ghare chhu.) (I am at home.)

Dialogue:

  • Person 1: તમે કેવા છો? (tame keva chho?) (How are you?)
  • Person 2: હું સારું છું. તમે છો? (hun saru chhu. tame cho?) (I am fine. And you?)
