In Malayalam, family members are referred to based on their gender and generation. Here's a list of the most common terms:

Usage Examples[edit | edit source]

  • Person 1: ഞാൻ ഞങ്ങളുടെ അമ്മയുടെ മകൾ. (Njan njangalude ammayude makal) (I am my mother's daughter)
  • Person 2: അതു പറ്റിയെന്താണ്? (Athu pattiyenjaanu?) (What about it?)
  • Person 1: ദീപിന്റെ മകൻ പ്രണവ്. (Deepinte makan Pranav) (Deep's son is Pranav)
  • Person 2: അതിൽ എത്ര പേരെ? (Athil ethra perae?) (How many people are there?)

Family Relationships[edit | edit source]

Malayali families are close-knit and often have different terms to express the relationship between a set of family members. Here are some typical ones:

മരുമകൻ marumakan nephew
അനിയമ്മ aaniyamam younger sister
ഭാര്യാ bharyaa wife
പൊത്തൻ pothan brother-in-law
മകന്റെ പതിൽ makannte pathil son-in-law
വേലക്കാരൻ velakkaran family driver
പെൺകുട്ടികൾ penkuttikal daughters
വീട്ടമ്മ veettamma grandmother

  • Person 1: ഞാൻ നിന്റെ പെണ്ണുടെ പതിൽ പോകുന്നു. (Njan ninne pennude pathil pokunnu) (I am going to my daughter-in-law's place)
  • Person 2: പോയി ജാം തയ്യാറാക്കുക. (Poyi jam thayyaraakkuka) (Go and prepare Jam)
  • Person 1: അൻവർ എനിക്ക് ഒരു മരുമകൻ ആണ്. (Anvar enikku oru marumakan aanu) (Anvar is my nephew)
  • Person 2: ഞാൻ അനിയമ്മയുടെ പ്രവാസത്തിന്റെ സഹായം ചെയ്യുകയും ചെയ്യും. (Njan aaniyamamayude pravaasathinte sahaayam cheyyukaayum chyyum) (I will help my younger sister's travel arrangements)

Addressing Family Members[edit | edit source]

In Malayalam, there are different ways to address family members based on their age and gender. Here's a list of the most common terms:

അമ്മാ ammaa Mother (affectionate term)
മാമാ maamaa Uncle
ചേച്ചിയെ chechiye Older sister (affectionate term)
കുട്ടനെ kuttane Younger brother (affectionate term)
തായ്മാമ thaaymaama Grandmother (affectionate term)
അച്ഛൻ acchan Father (polite term)
പേരൻ peran Grandfather (polite term)
കോളേജ് കുട്ടി kolaaje kuthi College-going son/daughter

  • Person 1: ആയിരിക്കിൽ നീ ഇന്ന് കാഴ്ച കേട്ടില്ല അമ്മാ. (Aayirikkil nee innu kaazhcha kettilla ammaa) (Didn't you see the show today, mother?)
  • Person 2: ഞാൻ കിട്ടിയിട്ടുണ്ട്. (Njan kittiyittundu) (I watched it)
  • Person 1: തായ്മാമ, നിങ്ങൾ എന്റെ പ്രിയപ്പെട്ട മഹത്വം ആണ്. (Thaaymaama, ningal ente priyapetta mahathvam aanu) (Grandmother, you are my beloved treasure)
  • Person 2: ചിന്തിച്ചോ? നന്ദിയും അതിന്. (Chinthicho? Nandiyum athinu) (Really? Thank you!)
