Introduction

In this lesson, you will learn vocabulary for common sports in Central Pashto. You will practice pronunciation and learn how to use these words in sentences and conversations. By the end of this lesson, you will be able to talk about your favorite sports in Pashto.

  • فوټبال غواړي، هغه هم که مې خوښه نه لري چندنې وخت کې. (Foṭbāl ghawāri, haghā ham kē mē khūsha nā lare chindanai wakhatakē.) - I like football, but I don't have much time to play it.
  • زمې تینس د پاسې وخت دی، تر څومره کې. (Zmē tines də pāsē wakhth dē, tar chawmarah kē) - I used to play tennis when I was younger.
  • ویولی بال لوبه غواړم. تر هغه نه کولی چندنې وخت دی. (Waiwali bāl luba ghawāram. Tar haghā nā kawalī chindanai wakhth dē.) - I like basketball. I don't play it much though.

Conversation

Here is a sample conversation using the sports vocabulary:

A: سلام، څومره سره يې کالی چې تاسو کوم غوره کېږي؟ (Sallām, chawmarah sara yē kāli chē tāsaw kwam ghawrah khējī?) - Hi, what sports do you like to play?

B: مې دال او کریکټ خوښلي. تاسو؟ (Mē dāl aw krīkeṭ khūshali. Tāsaw?) - I like to play volleyball and cricket. What about you?

A: مې هم فوټبال او تینیس خوښلي. (Mē ham foṭbāl aw tines khūshali.) - I like football and tennis as well.

B: داسې خوشحالی دی چې مې د ویولي بال خوښلي. یې تاسو لوبه وکړې نو لا؟ (Dāsē khushhālī dē chē mē d waiwali bāl khūshali. Yē tāsaw lubah wakrai now lā?) - That's great that you like basketball. Have you played it before?

A: نه، مې په څېر لا پلورلی نشته. (Nā, mē pə chēr lā plārali nishtah.) - No, I haven't played it much before.

B: زما په هغه وخته څېر کله لا هم پلورلم. (Zmā pə haghā wakhthah chēr kalah lā ham plārulam.) - I used to play it a lot back then.

Grammar

In Pashto, sports are usually used with the verb "خوښلي" (khūshali), which means 'to like to play.' It is used in the present tense form to describe what sports you like to play. Here is an example conjugation:
