In this lesson, we will learn about animals in Twi. Animals play a crucial role in our lives, whether as pets, food, or inspired by different traditions and cultural practices.

Farm Animals

Let's start with animals you might see on a farm.

Awɔ /a-wɔ/ Goat
Apɔnkye /a-pɔ-nkyɛ/ Turkey
Aduro /a-du-ro/ Cow
Akokoanoba /a-ko-ko-a-no-ba/ Duck
Apɔnkasiedua /a-pɔn-ka-si-ɛ-du-a/ Goose
Akosawo /a-ko-sa-wo/ Sheep

Dialogue:

  • Person 1: Wo te anɔpa? (Do you have a chicken?)
  • Person 2: Yɛ te anɔpa kakra. (We have a few chickens.)

Safari Animals

Now let's move to safari animals.

Dwene /dwe-ne/ Elephant
Woma /wo-ma/ Hippopotamus
Kaw /kaw/ Monkey
Kyerɛwukyekye /kye-rɛ-wu-kye-kye/ Giraffe

Dialogue:

  • Person 1: Wobɛn simpa yɛ no? (Where can we find a lion?)
  • Person 2: Yɛ bisa aburokyire no asafo. (We can find lions in game reserves.)

Domestic Animals

Kumadwene /ku-ma-dwe-ne/ Hamster
Aburokyire nkutoo /a-bu-ro-kyi-re nku-too/ Guinea pig

Anto /an-to/ Rabbits

Dialogue:

  • Person 1: Na wote aa kraman? (Do you have a dog?)
  • Person 2: Mepɛ sɛ mewɔ kraman kɔ bi. (I want to get a dog soon.)

Aquatic Animals

Lastly, let's look at animals that live in water.

Prako /pra-ko/ Crab
Osiewuni /o-si-e-wu-ni/ Lobster
Ɔmamfura /ɔ-mam-fu-ra/ Octopus

Dialogue:

  • Person 1: Wopɛ sɛ wo te kɔnɛ? (Do you like to have fish?)
  • Person 2: Mepɛ sɛ w'ate kɔnɛ suro. (I like to eat fish soup.)
