Bengali Grammar - How to Use "Have"

Hi Bengali learners! 😊
In this lesson, you will learn how to use the verb "have" in Bengali. This is an important concept to master, as it is frequently used in everyday conversations. We will also provide cultural information and interesting facts to help you remember and understand the usage of "have". So, let's get started!

What is "Have" in Bengali?

In Bengali, "have" is translated as "হাস" (haash). It's an auxiliary verb that indicates present perfect tense. In simple terms, it's a verb used to express possession, experience or completed actions. For example, "I have eaten already" or "I have been to Kolkata before". It can also be used to form questions and negative sentences in Bengali.

How to Use "Have" with Regular Verbs

To use "have" in Bengali with regular verbs, use the following formula:

[Subject] + [Auxiliary verb] + [Past participle of the verb]

Here are some examples to explain the formula:

Bengali Pronunciation English
আমি খেয়ে যাচ্ছি। Ami khey-e ja-chhi. I have eaten.
তুমি হাঁটতে গিয়েছো। Tumi haan-te giye-chho. You have walked.
সে কাজ করেছে। Se kaaj korechhe. He/She has worked.

As you can see, each sentence follows the formula: [Subject] + [Auxiliary verb] + [Past participle of the verb]. The auxiliary verb "have" is followed by the past participle of the main verb.

How to Use "Have" with Irregular Verbs

Using "have" with irregular verbs in Bengali is slightly different than using it with regular verbs. Here's the formula:

[Subject] + [Auxiliary verb] + [Past participle of the irregular verb]

Let's take some examples to understand this:

Bengali Pronunciation English
আমি গিয়েছি। Ami giyechhi. I have gone.
তুমি করেছো। Tumi korechho. You have done.
সে দেখেছে। Se dekhechhe. He/She has seen.

Here, the irregular verbs like "go", "do" and "see" have their own past participle forms. The auxiliary verb "have" is followed by the past participle forms of the irregular verbs.

Using "Have" to Ask Questions

In Bengali, you can form questions by using "have" as an auxiliary verb. Here's the formula:

[Auxiliary verb] + [Subject] + [Past participle of the verb] + [?]

Let's take some examples to understand this:

Bengali Pronunciation English
কি তুমি খেয়ে ছিলে? Ki tumi khey-e chhile? Have you eaten?
তোমার ভালো লাগলো কি না? Tomar bhalo laaglo ki na? Have you enjoyed?
কি সে ওদেখা দেখেছিলো? Ki se odekha dekhechhilo? Has he/she seen it?

Here, the auxiliary verb "have" is used at the beginning of the sentence to form a question. The subject comes after the auxiliary verb, followed by the past participle of the verb.

Using "Have" to Form Negative Sentences

To form negative sentences in Bengali, you can use "haven't" which is the contraction of "have not". Here's the formula:

[Subject] + [Auxiliary verb] + not + [Past participle of the verb]

Here are some examples to explain the formula:

Bengali Pronunciation English
আমি খেয়ে নাই। Ami khey-e nai. I have not eaten.
তুমি হাঁটতে না। Tumi haan-te na. You have not walked.
সে কাজ করেন না। Se kaaj korena na. He/She has not worked.

Here, the auxiliary verb "have" is followed by "not" to create the contraction "haven't". The past participle of the main verb comes after "not".

Practice Dialogue

Here's a short dialogue to help you practice using "have":

  • Person 1: কি তোমার বাথরুমে যাওয়া আছে? (Ki tomar bathroom-e jaowa achhe?) (Do you have to go to the bathroom?)
  • Person 2: হাঁ, আমি যাই। (Haan, ami jai.) (Yes, I have to go.)

In this dialogue, we can see how "have" is used to express the possession of a need to go to the bathroom.
