Serbian Culture → Introduction to Serbian Culture → Serbian Films
Serbian cinema has a long history, spanning from the early 20th century to modern-day masterpieces. Serbian films cover various genres, including art-house, drama, comedy, and documentary, and regularly participate in major international film festivals, such as Cannes, Venice, and Berlin. In this lesson, we will introduce some of the most outstanding Serbian movies, directors, and actors.
Modern Serbian Films
Serbian cinema has gained international recognition in recent decades. Emerging directors have contributed to the critical acclaim of Serbian cinema. Among them are:
- Emir Kusturica - A two-time Palme d'Or winner at Cannes Festival for "When Father Was Away on Business" and "Underground". His films tend to be surreal, containing strong social and political commentaries.
- Goran Paskaljevic - A director who has worked extensively in Europe and the USA. His movie, "The Powder Keg," representing a subtle blend of black humour and social critique, was awarded the FIPRESCI Prize at the Venice Film Festival.
- Srdan Golubović - Known for directing thought-provoking films such as "Klopka" and "Circles," which was in the World Cinema Dramatic Competition at the Sundance Film Festival.
Classic Serbian Films
- Who's That Singing Over There? (Ko to tamo peva) - A movie taking place during World War II that follows the adventures of a group of passengers on a bus, who are heading to Belgrade.
- "The Marathon Family" (Maratonci Trče Poezd) - Considered a cult classic in the Balkans, the film portrays the lives of the Kadijević family as they prepare for a marathon.
- "When I Am Dead and Gone" (Kad budem mrtav i beo) - A film about two generations of smugglers in communist Yugoslavia.
Notable Serbian Actors
- Miki Manojlović - Best known for his role in "Underground" and for portraying Lazar in "The White Crow."
- Branislav Lečić - A Serbian actor who has appeared in more than 50 films, including "Bure Baruta," "The Tour," and "The Parade."
