The verbs in Tamil are classified into two categories: Strong verbs and Weak verbs. Turning a verb root into a present tense verb depends on if the verb is a weak or strong verb:


Present Tense - Weak Verbs

The present tense refers to a sentence where the action is currently taking place. Examples of present tense sentences are “He runs”, “She reads”, and “They play”.


Structure

verb root + கிற் + verb suffix


Examples

Tamil English
நாய் தூங்குகிறது The dog sleeps
அவர்கள் விளையாடுகிறார்கள் They play
அவன் வாங்குகிறான் He buys

Present Tense - Strong Verbs

Structure

verb root + க்கிற் + verb suffix

கமலா படிக்கிறாள் Kamala reads
நீ பார்க்கிறாய் You watch
நான் நினைக்கிறேன் I think
