Kazakh Grammar - Adjectives

Hi Kazakh learners!😊 In today's lesson, we will be discussing adjectives in the Kazakh language. Adjectives are words that describe or modify other words, usually nouns. They can be used to give more information about a noun, such as its size, shape, color, or age. Knowing how to use adjectives correctly is an important part of mastering the Kazakh language.

Types of Adjectives

Adjectives can be divided into two main categories: descriptive adjectives and possessive adjectives.

Descriptive Adjectives

Descriptive adjectives are used to describe the qualities of a noun. Examples of descriptive adjectives include:

  • Big
  • Small
  • Round
  • Square
  • Red
  • Blue
  • Old
  • Young

In Kazakh, descriptive adjectives come before the noun they are describing. For example:

  • Көп тамақ (Big tree)
  • Кіші қорақ (Small mountain)
  • Түсті айырма (Red book)

Possessive Adjectives

Possessive adjectives are used to show ownership or possession. Examples of possessive adjectives include:

  • My
  • Your
  • His
  • Her
  • Its
  • Our
  • Their

In Kazakh, possessive adjectives come after the noun they are describing. For example:

  • Тамақтың менің (My tree)
  • Айырмасың сіздің (Your book)
  • Тауың оның (His mountain)

Adjective Agreement

In Kazakh, adjectives must agree with the noun they are describing in terms of gender and number. For example, if the noun is masculine singular, then the adjective must also be masculine singular. If the noun is feminine plural, then the adjective must also be feminine plural.

For example:

  • Көп тамақ (Big tree - masculine singular)
  • Көп тамақтар (Big trees - masculine plural)
  • Көп қарағай (Big house - feminine singular)
  • Көп қарағайлар (Big houses - feminine plural)

Adjective Order

When using multiple adjectives to describe a noun, it is important to remember the correct order in which they should be placed. The order is as follows:

1. Quantity or number 2. Quality or opinion 3. Size 4. Age 5. Shape 6. Color 7. Origin 8. Material 9. Purpose

For example:

  • Түсті кіші тамақ (Red small tree)
  • Тартысты балақай қарағай (Square white house)
