Armenian Grammar - Conditional Mood

Hi Armenian learners! 😊
In today's lesson, we will be discussing the conditional mood in Armenian grammar. This is an important concept to understand if you want to become proficient in the language. We will look at how to form the conditional mood, as well as some examples of its use.

Overview

The conditional mood is used to express a hypothetical situation or condition. It is formed by adding the suffix -եր to the verb stem. For example, the verb գիտել (to know) becomes գիտեեր (would know).

Examples

Here are some examples of the conditional mood in action:

  • Եթե ես գիտեեր, ապա կարողանամ հասկանալ: (If I knew, then I would understand.)
  • Եթե ես չգիտեեր, ապա չկարողանամ հասկանալ: (If I didn't know, then I wouldn't understand.)
  • Եթե ես գիտեեր, ապա կարողանամ անել: (If I knew, then I would be able to say.)

Usage

The conditional mood is used to express a hypothetical situation or condition. It can also be used to express a wish or desire. For example:

  • Եթե ես կարողանամ, ապա կարողանամ անել: (If I could, then I would say.)
  • Եթե ես կարողանամ, ապա կարողանամ հասկանալ: (If I could, then I would understand.)

The conditional mood can also be used to express a polite request. For example:

  • Եթե կարողանա՞մ, ապա կարողանա՞մ անել: (If you could, then would you be able to say?)
  • Եթե կարողանա՞մ, ապա կարողանա՞մ հասկանալ: (If you could, then would you be able to understand?)

Conclusion

In this lesson, we have discussed the conditional mood in Armenian grammar. We have looked at how to form the conditional mood, as well as some examples of its use. We have also seen how it can be used to express a hypothetical situation or condition, as well as a wish or desire.
