Central Kurdish Grammar - How to Ask Questions

Hi Central Kurdish learners! 😊
In today's lesson, we will be discussing how to ask questions in Central Kurdish. Asking questions is an important part of any language, and Central Kurdish is no exception. We will look at the different types of questions, as well as the grammar rules that govern them. By the end of this lesson, you should have a good understanding of how to ask questions in Central Kurdish.

Types of Questions

There are two main types of questions in Central Kurdish: yes/no questions and wh-questions. Yes/no questions are used to ask for a simple yes or no answer, while wh-questions are used to ask for more detailed information. Let's look at each type of question in more detail.

Yes/No Questions

Yes/no questions are formed by using the verb 'bûn' (to be) in the present tense. The subject of the sentence comes before the verb, and the verb is followed by the particle 'e'. For example:

  • Tu bûne? - Are you?
  • Ez bûn? - Am I?
  • Wî bûne? - Is he/she?

The particle 'e' can also be used to form negative yes/no questions. For example:

  • Tu ne bûne? - Aren't you?
  • Ez ne bûn? - Aren't I?
  • Wî ne bûne? - Isn't he/she?

Wh-Questions

Wh-questions are formed by using the interrogative pronouns 'çi', 'çima', 'kî', 'ka', 'ku', 'kur', 'çawa', and 'çiyawaz'. These pronouns come before the verb, and the verb is followed by the particle 'e'. For example:

  • Çi bûne? - What is?
  • Çima bûne? - Why is?
  • Kî bûne? - Who is?
  • Ka bûne? - Where is?
  • Ku bûne? - When is?
  • Kur bûne? - How is?
  • Çawa bûne? - How is it done?
  • Çiyawaz bûne? - How much is?

The particle 'e' can also be used to form negative wh-questions. For example:

  • Çi ne bûne? - What isn't?
  • Çima ne bûne? - Why isn't?
  • Kî ne bûne? - Who isn't?
  • Ka ne bûne? - Where isn't?
  • Ku ne bûne? - When isn't?
  • Kur ne bûne? - How isn't?
  • Çawa ne bûne? - How isn't it done?
  • Çiyawaz ne bûne? - How much isn't?
