Central Kurdish Grammar - Plurals

Forming Plurals in Central Kurdish[edit | edit source]

In Central Kurdish, regular plurals are formed by adding the suffixes -an or -ên to the singular noun. Whether to use -an or -ên depends on the final vowel of the singular word.

Plural suffix -an[edit | edit source]

- If a singular word ends with a vowel, the plural suffix -an is used.

Examples:

کڕین kêrin house
کەڕان kêran houses
دۆزینەوە dozînewe student
دۆزینان dozinan students
سێوە sewe apple
سێوان sewan apples

Plural suffix -ên[edit | edit source]

- If a singular word ends with a consonant, the plural suffix -ên is used.

Examples:

Person 2: خۆشترین شتێکەکانم هەنگاوەکانن. (Xweşterîn şteyêkêkanem hengawekann. - My favorite things are sunsets.)

Person 1: چەند کتێب هەیە لە خانووەکەت؟ (Çend kitêb heye lê xanûwekêt?) - How many books are in your house?

Person 2: هەشت کتێب هەیە. (Heşt kitêb hewî.) - There are eight books.
