GermanGrammar0 to A1 CourseCases: Nominative and Accusative

Nominative Case[edit | edit source]

The nominative case is used when the noun is the subject of the sentence. In German, the nominative case is also used after the verbs "sein" (to be) and "werden" (to become).

For example:

German Pronunciation North Azerbaijani
Der Hund de:r hʊnt İt
isst ɪst yeyir
den Knochen de:n kno:çən südlərini
. . .

Translation: The dog eats the bone.

In this example, "Der Hund" is in the nominative case because it is the subject of the sentence.

Other examples:

  • Ich bin müde. (I am tired.)
  • Wir werden Freunde sein. (We will be friends.)

Accusative Case[edit | edit source]

The accusative case is used when the noun is the direct object of the sentence. In German, the accusative case is also used after certain prepositions, such as "durch" (through) and "für" (for).

For example:

German Pronunciation North Azerbaijani
Der Hund de:r hʊnt İt
frisst fʀɪst qidalarını yeyir
den Knochen de:n kno:çən südlərini
. . .

Translation: The dog eats the bone.

In this example, "den Knochen" is in the accusative case because it is the direct object of the verb "frisst".

Other examples:

  • Ich trinke einen Kaffee. (I am drinking a coffee.)
  • Ich gehe durch den Park. (I am walking through the park.)
