Future Tense Basics[edit | edit source]
The Bengali future tense shows that an action or event is going to happen in the future. Here's an example:
āĻ°āĻŦāĻŋ āĻāĻā§āĻā§ āĻāĻ˛ āĻāĻ°āĻŦā§āĨ¤ (Robi acche kol korbe.) Robi will call tomorrow.
In this example, the verb "āĻāĻ°āĻŦā§" (korbe) means "will do". This tense is used when we want to talk about actions that have not yet happened, but will happen in the future.
Conjugation[edit | edit source]
Let's take a look at the conjugation of the future tense in Bengali. To form the future tense, we need to add the suffix "-āĻŦā§" ("-be") to the verb. Here are a few examples:
Bengali | Pronunciation | English |
---|---|---|
āĻā§āĻ˛āĻž āĻšāĻŦā§ | khe-la ho-be | It will be played |
āĻāĻ¸āĻŦā§ | ash-be | He/She will come |
āĻļāĻŋāĻāĻŦā§ | shikh-be | He/She will learn |
āĻāĻžāĻŦā§ | kha-be | He/She will eat |
Notice how we only need to add the suffix to the root of the verb to create the future tense. It's important to remember to use this suffix to create the future tense correctly.
Using the Future Tense in a Dialogue[edit | edit source]
Here's an example dialogue to illustrate how to use the future tense in Bengali:
- Person 1: āĻāĻāĻžāĻŽā§ āĻŽāĻžāĻ¸ā§ āĻāĻŽāĻŋ āĻĒā§āĻžāĻļā§āĻ¨āĻž āĻļā§āĻ°ā§ āĻāĻ°āĻŦāĨ¤ (Agami mase ami porashuna shuru korbo.)(I will start teaching next month.)
- Person 2: āĻ¸ā§āĻ¨ā§āĻĻāĻ°āĨ¤ āĻāĻŽāĻŋ āĻāĻĒāĻ¨āĻžāĻ° āĻā§āĻ˛āĻžāĻ¸ā§ āĻ¨āĻŋāĻŦāĨ¤ (Shundor. Ami apnar classe nib.)(Nice. I will take your class.)
Notice how the future tense in Bengali is quite easy to use once you understand the suffix "-āĻŦā§".
Exceptions[edit | edit source]
While the future tense is generally straightforward in Bengali, there are a few exceptions worth mentioning. Some verbs will change their stem slightly, and others might have unique endings. Here are a few examples of irregular verbs in the future tense:
Bengali | Pronunciation | English |
---|---|---|
āĻāĻ¸āĻŦ | ash-bo | I/We will come |
āĻšāĻŦ | ho-bo | I/We will be |
āĻĨāĻžāĻāĻŦ | thak-bo | I/We will stay |
Note how the "-āĻŦā§" suffix is replaced by the irregular stem of the verb. This is important to keep in mind when conjugating irregular verbs in the future tense.
