Connecting Verbs

In this lesson, you will learn about the connecting verbs 'is' and 'are' in Korean. These verbs are important because they allow you to create more complex sentences. By the end of this lesson, you will be able to use these verbs to describe people, places, and things.

The Verb 'is'

The verb 'is' is used to describe a singular noun. In Korean, the verb 'is' can be translated as the word "입니다" (in Hangul: "이다"). Here are some examples:

Korean Pronunciation North Azerbaijani
사과는 빨갛습니다. "sa-gwa-neun-bbal-gat-seum-ni-da" Alma qırmızıdır.
그 여자는 지금 바쁩니다. "geu-yeo-ja-neun-ji-geum-bap-peum-ni-da" O qadın indi məşğuldur.

As you can see, the verb 'is' is used to describe the color of an apple and the current state of a woman. Note that in Korean, the verb 'is' always comes at the end of the sentence.

The Verb 'are'

The verb 'are' is used to describe plural nouns. In Korean, the verb 'are' can be translated as the word "입니다" (in Hangul: "이다"). Here are some examples:

Korean Pronunciation North Azerbaijani
여러분은 참 잘하십니다. "yeo-reo-bun-eun-cham-jal-ha-sip-ni-da" Hamınız çox yaxşı edirsiniz.
나와 내 친구들은 같은 학교에 다닙니다. "na-wa-nae-chin-gu-deul-eun-gat-eun-hak-gyo-e-da-nip-ni-da" Mən və mənim dostlarım eyni məktəbdə oxuyurlar.

As you can see, the verb 'are' is used to describe the good performance of a group of people and the fact that the speaker and their friends attend the same school. Note that, as with the verb 'is', the verb 'are' always comes at the end of the sentence in Korean.

Summary

In this lesson, you learned about the connecting verbs 'is' and 'are' in Korean. These verbs are used to describe singular and plural nouns, respectively. Remember that in Korean, these verbs always come at the end of the sentence. With this knowledge, you can now create more complex sentences and talk about people, places, and things in Korean.
