Southern Sotho cuisine is rich and varied, with a mix of traditional and modern influences. In this lesson, we will explore common Southern Sotho foods and beverages, including traditional dishes and how to order at a restaurant.

Traditional Southern Sotho Foods

Southern Sotho cuisine is known for its hearty stews and porridges, as well as its use of maize meal and beans. Here are some traditional Southern Sotho dishes you might encounter:

  • Pap - a thick porridge made from maize meal, often served with a tomato and onion sauce or meat.
  • Morogo - a leafy green vegetable, often served cooked with beans or as a side dish.
  • Chakalaka - a spicy relish made from vegetables and spices.
  • Diphaphata - a fried bread made from a dough of maize meal and wheat flour.
  • Sesotho chicken - roasted or grilled chicken prepared in a traditional Southern Sotho way.

Bogobe jwa motogo Porridge made from sorghum or millet.
Bogobe jwa lerotse Porridge made from wild fruits.
Liphoso Bean stew.
Morogo wa dinawa Leafy vegetable stew.
Seswaa Slow-cooked meat in a tomato and onion sauce.

To order a dish, you can say:

  • Nka tla bogobe jwa motogo kapa seswaa - I would like sorghum porridge or slow-cooked meat.
  • Nka tla rea roba liphoso - We will share a bean stew.

You can also ask the waiter:

  • Ke kopa kaofela thotse - Can I have the full menu?
  • Ke kopa mokgwa o o reng, "cheesecake" - Can you tell me what "cheesecake" is?

To ask for the bill, you can say:

  • Nka tla bona motheo - I would like to see the bill.

Beverages

In Southern Sotho culture, it is common to offer guests a drink, such as tea or coffee, when they arrive at your home. Here are some common Southern Sotho beverages:

  • Madila - fermented sorghum beer, often served in a calabash.
  • Leeto - tea, often served with milk and sugar.
  • Khokhotso - coffee, often served with milk and sugar.
  • Mageu - a non-alcoholic drink made from fermented maize meal.

When ordering a drink at a restaurant, you can say:

  • Nka tla khokhotso - I would like coffee.
  • Nka tla madila - I would like sorghum beer.
